IDFC First Bank Debit Card Rewards Mess – Customers Harassed for Bank’s Mistake?

I feel that this is the beginning of the end of reward points on CC bill payment. First HDFC Millenia debit card stopped now IDFC, next will be SBI VDC. Banks r becoming smarter day by day. Looks like we have to stay content with Rs.5-10 cashback on cred/cheq. The golden days of getting CB on CC bill payments r over

At one point of time, rewards/cashback exist to encourage spending on lifestyle and daily needs, not to give for repaying debt (technically it doesn't generate revenue to the bank). Will go back to that time very soon.

People are too greedy , especially some, any benefit they see they just have to abuse it to a point that majority cant even see the daylight of that benefit...no commonsense 🤦, offer will last long if u use it with in limits. Glad the offer is gone now, anyways the majority weren't getting the benefits

There is not much to Analyze this is just what is the reality.

Tomorrow their will be another trick another idfc another debit card another credit card

It's just a matter of using whatever trick product or Avenue is available at that time and not get attached to it

Banks should start showing MCC code on OTP page
Why should customers guess where the transaction is tagged grocery, fuel, hotel, or gift voucher?
Wrong MCC tagging no rewards customer frustration
@IDFCFIRSTBank especially you har baar “internal policy” bolne se better hai transparency dikhana.

We must also recognise that IDFC is the only bank that provides mcc code for all cc txns even though after the txns. I feel they are not getting enough credit for that. Account freeze is a bad thing, RBI should bring clear guidelines on it to set the accountability of all stakeholders.

My simple funda. If some bank giving me free money through tricks I can't blame them for any action taken to rectify those tricks. I am also a beneficiary though, and I recognise that, own that, applause that. I am thankful to them for such kind things in my difficult time.

We should thank them instead of blame them so much. Rewards stopped. It's sad. But not unexpected.

thankfully i never had any banking relation wid idfc n no future plans. But users started misusing it. I have seen people paying credit card bills of others n making money. What can u expect from bank. They are also doing business for making money. People should realise that any trick or loophole if misused will go.

Time to empty idfc account i would say, there is no benefit and safety in maintaining huge balances in idfc wealth
Yes.
I think a better business decision for idfc would have been continue that reward from zero rupees with reward rate 0.5% for classic, 1% for Select, 1.5% for wealth, and 2.0% for Private in all mcc excluding debt re-payment upto Rs. 500, 1000, 3000, 5000 monthly cap.

They would have earned that much by CASA interest savings.

While I understand your angst, Sumanta, on certain points you are flat out wrong.
First of all, I have 800 reward points on my IDFC First Bank account. I don’t use the IDFC Bank debit card to pay my credit card bills, and everything I’ve mentioned here is based on the experiences of other members, not my own. So, I don’t have any strong reason to be upset with IDFC First Bank. In fact, my primary bank account is with IDFC First, and I’m quite satisfied with their services. However, that doesn’t mean I won’t question them if I come across something that seems wrong.

A bank has every right to block transactions at a certain merchant if its internal risk assessment mechanisms indicate something suspicious.
Absolutely, if the bank detects any suspicious activity, they should monitor, question the customer, and even block transactions if necessary. But as a general rule, banks usually verify by contacting the customer and then allow future transactions. Remember, Zavo is not illegal, nor are they engaged in anything that warrants being blocked by banks. And this issue is not limited to Zavo, recently, IDFC First Bank has blocked a few other merchants as well. Most importantly, this is not a credit card transaction but a debit card transaction. A bank cannot restrict a customer from using their own money. All this drama seems to have been done just to stop customers from earning reward points. If that was the intention, the bank could have simply excluded the MCC, but instead, they chose other methods, which is not correct.

No one is forcing you to use IDFC First bank. As a customer, you cannot dictate terms to the bank, particularly when it has the fullest backing of the RBI as far as risk mechanisms are concerned
I don’t know why you think I’m being silly, but after reading this, I’m quite sure you’re not fully aware of customers’ rights. In India, a customer can open a bank account with any bank of their choice. Just as a customer cannot dictate terms to a bank, a bank also cannot dictate which apps or platforms a customer is allowed to use.

And if you really believe that the bank is wrong on this point, why haven't you filed a complaint with the ombudsman yet? If you have already, do post it, please, and keep us updated about the progress
As I mentioned, I personally don’t use IDFC debit cards for such payments. If I were affected, I would definitely escalate the matter to the RBI Ombudsman or even the consumer court. And I strongly suggest that those who are directly affected should take this step, because that’s the only way we’ll get proper resolution.
