MRCC vs Gold Charge

Rajat Nigam

TF Buzz
Which card is better between Amex MRCC and Gold Charge card (or any other Amex card) ?

The card which I mainly use are -
1. Axis Ace (for bill payments upto ₹10K and other offline uses)
2. SBI Cashback (strictly for online use)
3. SBI BPCL (for fuel)
4. RBL Valueplus supercard (for fuel upto ₹2500 p.m)

Major MONTHLY spends are -
1. Electricity bill payments of ~₹20000 per month (pm)
2. Offline spends of ₹25000 pm
3. Fuel spends of around ₹6000 pm
4. Online spends of around ₹7000 pm

I would prefer reward redemption in Amazon Pay vouchers rather than a luxurious hotel stay.

since here all calculation were discussed for amazon pay only... my question is if return is just around 5% dont you think its better to use amazon pay ICICI credit card...
flat 5 % return ..pls corrrect me .... or am i missing anything here??

5% is on shopping on Amazon.
For bill payments it's usually 2%
And for electricity Amazon doesn't accept payments above 20k and sometimes not even above 15k. So, vouchers can be used then.

I have DCB (LTF) for majority of my spends.
For Fuel I have Axis Indian Oil LTF.
My monthly spends are fairly low around 20K per month except fuel.

Other than these regular spends I spend around 2.5-3L per year on travel.

I am not into luxury hotels so mostly will redeem the Amex points to Apay voucher.

Considering my spends should I get any of the amex cards in the ongoing referral program?

I would say refer to page 1,2 of this thread if your usage fit there then take one of amex card.

Can anyone suggest what card should I get considering the following spends? What is the most optimal way to spend on below categories and earn maximum points provided that I will only convert points to amazon pay voucher.

Nps: 50k yearly. Can break it down to invest in multiple of 1500 every month for optimum usage

Insurance: 54k once a year. Can use amazon pay balance for this

Internet bill payment: Approx 1700 every month. Can use amazon pay balance for this

Health insurance: Around 10k + 25k once a year. May or may not be able to use amazon pay.

Please share the reward rate I will be able to earn as well.

I am leaning towards mrcc as renewal fee can be waived at 1.5L spends, which can be reached. But for gold, there is no renewal fee waiver. But for gold, there is 5x multiplier, which can be more rewarding if there is some way to waive off renewal fee.

Damn, now I am even more confused.

PS: I already have other cc for other spends such as sbi cashback, airtel axis, tataneu, etc. So I am only considering amex cc for above spends.

TO make it very simple:
if your spends are about 4L - then Plat Travel is the best
if your spends are around 1.5L then MRCC is the best esprcially thru referral program
If you buy a lots of vouchers/ shopping thru Reward Multiplier site: then Gold can be considered..

So in your case, Gold is ruled out .. then its between MRCC vs Plat travel.. pick your choice ..

Interesting, let's do a quick comparison:

Yearly expenses:
20,400 (1700 monthly Internet)
50,000 (NPS)
54,000 (Insurance)
35,000 (Health insurance)

1,50,000 Total

I believe most can be paid with Amazon Pay except the NPS part.

1,00,000 / 12 = 8,333 monthly (keep stocking vouchers)

MRCC and Gold Charge both get you 1000 bonus points on 6k purchases monthly.
But MRCC helps on the occasional months where you expenses goes up which gets you additional 1000 bonus MR points on 20k spends.
(Gold Charge multiplier will get you 5x points compared to 2x MRCC on vouchers but won't make much of a difference since your expenses are low)

Also, comparing the fees, free first year on MRCC. Second year is ₹1500(negotiable).
While Gold Charge card is ₹1000 for first year and second year is ₹4000.

So, with that, MRCC seems like a clear winner for you.

Feel free to DM me if you have any other questions or need help with the application! :)

Thanks for this. I think I will consider mrcc then as I can reach 1.5L spend for renewal fee waiver. Btw, is there any way I can get renewal fee waived off for gold charge?

There are 2 renewal offers that users often get:

1. 50% off on annual fees.
2. 100% off if 1L spent in coming 90days

If you've HDFC ergo insurance, Amex is not accepted :( I'm not sure how many insurance company don't accept Amex.
I thought only offline acceptability can be an issue while applying for Amex, but unfortunately online acceptability is also an issue with Amex cards.

Hence, I'm planning to close Amex MRCC as like you I considered only A-pay vouchers for redemption from 18k gold collection.

PS : they should bring the statement credit back for redemption, any thoughts folks?

It might not be accepted directly but you can always try paying using Amazon Pay instead.
