My First-Hand Experience with CIBIL & Experian Dispute Resolution and Compensation
Informative Threads New
Hi everyone, I want to share my experience with CIBIL and Experian credit bureaus.

Around two months ago, I raised disputes with both CIBIL and Experian to get some credit inquiries removed from my credit report — 4 with CIBIL and 2 with Experian.

Out of the 4 CIBIL inquiries:

  • 2 were closed within 2 days, but they weren’t removed on the first attempt.
  • For the remaining 2, I did receive update confirmation emails, but there were delays in processing — one took 26 days and the other 5 days.

According to RBI guidelines, if a credit bureau delays dispute resolution beyond the stipulated time, the customer becomes eligible for compensation. I wanted to clarify whether the compensation is calculated based on calendar days (including weekends and holidays) or only working days. From what I understand, it is calculated per calendar day at ₹100 per day of delay.

Initially, there were no visible updates on the CIBIL website, except a notification showing that I was eligible for compensation. However, after a few days, the exact compensation amount was displayed — ₹2,600 for the 26-day delay — and the amount was credited directly to my bank account. In the second case (5-day delay), I received ₹500. So in both cases, compensation was provided by CIBIL for the delay in resolving my disputes.

This was the first time I received compensation from CIBIL.

Now coming to Experian — I raised disputes for 2 inquiries there as well. The situation was slightly different. In most cases, banks or NBFCs delay their responses, and that happened with me too. The bank's reply was delayed, so the compensation came from the bank's end, not Experian directly.

Experian doesn’t show detailed status updates like CIBIL does. You just get a confirmation email, and the compensation is directly credited to your bank account. I found the transparency to be less with Experian, but as per RBI rules, compensation is still applicable if there’s a delay.

In total, I’ve received around ₹5,000 in compensation in my bank account.
I’m also attaching a screenshot from one of the cases so you all can check it out.

This was my first experience dealing with online credit report disputes via CIBIL and Experian.

I’ve already published a separate post on how to remove credit inquiries, so feel free to check that out too.

Thanks for reading!
