Need Health Insurance Advice for Parents (Pre-existing Conditions)

TF Buzz
Hi everyone,

I'm looking for advice on health insurance for my parents. My dad is 49 with high blood pressure, and my mom is 46 with diabetes. They have government insurance, but for serious medical issues, we prefer private hospital care.

I'm searching for a plan covering pre-existing conditions (high blood pressure and diabetes) with strong coverage for private treatment. A 25 lakh cover is what I'm aiming for. Policy Bazaar seems helpful for comparing plans, and ICICI Health AdvantEdge is on my radar.

Any advice or recommendations from your experience? Thanks!

Go for Care health insurance. It will cover diabetic as well. Also, if there's no claim, the sum assured will be doubled.

I assume, ICICI won't accept if HbA1c is above 7

Hi
Few pointers from my side. Not sure which moderator will get offended this time.

1. Go for private insurers only and definitely not Star health. Look for established players, try to avoid new age insurers.
2. On the day of filling proposal form, get full body check up for your parents and mention everything from health checkup report and past hospitalisations if any. Even if admitted for smallest thing also.
3. If buying from policy bazaar, ask them to let you mention everything, don't let them do it for you. After you complete the process, you will receive the proposal form by mail, read it properly and incase anything is missing or wrong, just clear everything with the final verification call from insurer.
4. Lastly record every conversation.

i looked at the annual report in IRDAI website and care health insurance have claim ratio of 57% so i didnt look into this.
edit: sorry i was looking at incurred claim ratio. can you please hlep me on how to check if a insurer covers HbA1c above 7?

What platform do you prefer for taking health insurance?

HDFC
NIVA BUPA
CARE

Must check these 3.

Recently I purchased for my brother and myself, my brother has pre existing conditions.

I took from care and took an add on, where they have reduced 1 year waiting period.

Normally my brother has to serve 3 years waiting period, but after the add on they reduced the waiting period for 1 year.

i read lots of bad reviews about care.
they reject claim by saying patient could have been managed by OPD and no hospitalization was required even for people having high grade fever, etc.

Would like to understand what is the experience of the TFians with Care insurance regarding cashless or reimbursements?

Actually you will find these kind of issues with every company, it depends how you are handling the things although I have no past experience about this.

And HDFC and Niva Bupa was expensive so I took care, care is giving me all the necessary facilities.

And they have a wellness discount program.

And I have discussed with Ditto , they have also suggested me the Care supreme according to my needs.

I had a similar conundrum and at that time had Care Freedom as the only option to go for. Try to explore PSU insurance as well if eligible considering age is still under 50 apart from private options. Try to avoid making a direct purchase through website and go through a reputed channel partner of respective insurance company you decide to go for as more than all the ratios it’s the mettle and experience of that respective partner which shall help you in case of any claim. As it is if you are making a claim if you have disclosed everything then chances of rejection are less but how much of it is disbursed and how long it takes to disburse is where the above mentioned partner’s expertise comes into the picture. Speaking from experience of 5 claims since last 5 years across 3 insurance providers both Private and PSU.

Compare plans at Policybazaar and go for purchase either through Ditto or Beshak or reputed channel partner. Getting support at the time of claim is a big hassle hence always best to go through a medium and have peace of mind rather than risking fighting alone with the provider at the time of claim.

It’s a kind of mixed bag. At one time they processed smoothly since it was cashless at network hospital but in case of reimbursement it took almost 3 months just to get the claim id registered and then get the claim processed. Other companies are no different but the fundamental rule stands that if you have clear disclosures at the time of policy issuance and it’s covered as per document then what reason they cite for denial/rejection is irrelevant. You just have to document it all and fight it all. This holds true across all the companies.
