Old Credit cards handling - What do you do with it? Options ?

Hi..I read the news about recycling of old credit/debit cards by Mastercard. I found it interesting and wanted to share here:

Have a look:

Few Important facts shared:
  • Total Cards in circulation (Industry estimate) - 26 Billion (2022). It will increase to 28.4 Billion in 2027.
  • Yearly new cards - 600 Million
  • 10000 cards weigh around 50 KG.

This move is definitely environmental friendly. But I am more interested in knowing how we handle/manage the old cards after closure or replacement. A few options in my opinion are:
  1. Souvenir - There is no reason of dislike keeping old cards. Not only it makes a great collection but also every card has a story which you would like remember and laugh may be later 🙂
  2. Discard - Just like the book says, cut the card in diagonal and throw or shred.
  3. Re-use - As Key-chain or flash cards or something else
  4. Recycle - If it is available and being done.
  5. Nothing - since the card is expired and closed or not in use. So it doesn't matter what happens to it( somewhere in house, dustbin etc) 😛
  6. Others - Not sure but I really think within this community we can get some interesting answers.
So how many cards do you have with you...Active....Expired....and what do you do with it?
Here I go, I have around 12 active and 50+ old/expired cards. As suggested all the cards are with me. Initially I kept these for security, I used to think that even expired someone could do something with it. And now it is more of a collection and there is always a space for 250 grams of plastic at home..isn't it 🙂

Looking forward for the interesting responses on this :

I follow the old ways 😂

Any insights - Funny as well as Informative...both are welcome 😀
Souvenir - I have actually kept all my old and expired debit and credit cards. I couldn't throw them away or cut them into pieces because they are made of plastic. We all know that using plastic is harmful to the environment, couldn't bring myself to dispose of the cards. So, I still have all my expired or active debit cards, credit cards, and even my priority pass. I haven't thrown away the packaging that came with them either. However, I have decided that during this Diwali, I will finally dispose of all the packaging boxes. As for the cards, I currently have 23 active ones, and I will need to check how many expired or cancelled cards I have. Although, I do remember cutting a few debit cards when I was a teenager.

I really appreciate the reason for keeping the cards. My reason was more of the convenience and security ... but I am glad it somehow contributed to the higher purpose 🙂
