Avoid HDD get SSD, if it's internal and PC is kinda old get Sata SSD, if newer PC then check if it supports NVME ssd.
Buy any model from a good brand like WD, Crucial, can't go wrong with them.
If you're going to keep it safe at home and don't travel a lot.
Get a sata enclosure and Sata SSD, that's what I do, works well and it is cheaper.
I upgraded my laptop from hdd to ssd 4 years ago so used the enclosure for it's old HDD.
The HDD failed 2 yrs ago, so now I got a SSD in the enclosure and it's back in business.

It depends on what is the use of this? Do you really need that frequent access to buy an SSD / M.2... because if you just need it for external storage, instead of speed, focus on storage. Not just current storage, but future requirements as well, otherwise, you might end up like me, Having 10 TB across 4 different external hard drives...
