NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) has joined forces with Singapore-based payments firm HitPay to expand Unified Payments Interface (UPI) acceptance in Singapore.

This collaboration will provide Indian travellers to make QR code-based payments at various venues across Singapore.

The aim is to roll out UPI acceptance “progressively” to over 12,000 merchants in Singapore.

This move is designed to offer Indian tourists a familiar payment experience abroad and provide Singaporean businesses with a new online and offline payment option to serve Indian consumers.

NPCI International CEO Ritesh Shukla said: “We are focused on expanding UPI’s global presence to make transactions easier for Indians traveling abroad. Our partnership with HitPay expands UPI acceptance in Singapore, offering Indians a reliable, cost-effective payment option during their travel. This collaboration also highlights our commitment to building a globally connected payments ecosystem”.

HitPay CEO and co-founder Aditya Haripurkar stated: “UPI has transformed India’s payment landscape with unmatched speed, simplicity, and scalability. This integration reflects HitPay’s vision to be the trusted partner for merchants in Singapore, providing seamless access to the fastest-growing markets in Asia and beyond.”

HitPay is licenced in six jurisdictions such as Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines, it enables businesses’ access to digital payments

In January this year, NIPL collaborated with Magnati, a Middle Eastern payment solutions provider, to extend QR-based UPI merchant payments in the UAE.

It's a gimmick. I just spent a month in Malaysia and Singapore. I never use UPI in India or abroad as tapping a credit card is faster and better. However, I did try to test it at a few locations, even in Little India and it never worked. In comparison, every shop and merchant accepted Union Pay and Chinese tourists paid for everything with their phones. Anyway, a credit card is far better than UPI abroad or even in India.

UPI has not been launched in Malaysia yet. Also you need to activate International UPI before payment.

Singapore - it will take few years to accept all merchant UPI payment. Some Singapore merchant already accept UPI and RuPay Card too.

Apart from this, Singapore's Paynow and India's UPI is now linked. Some banks already lived and easily transfer/send or received money between Singapore and India.
