Hi All,

From Thai Airways you cannot book Award flight (direct route) from any Indian airport.
The dropdown doesn't show any Indian Airports.

More details about Thai Airways Royal orchid plus is my post in Public forum here: https://www.technofino.in/community/threads/redeeming-miles-on-thai-airways-royal-orchid-plus.13642/
[DO NOT MENTION ANYTHING ABOUT THE BELOW HACK IN THE PUBLIC POST]

There is a way to redeem Thai Airways from an Indian airport. here is the way.

Thai Airways has flights from BLR, BOM etc to BKK (Bangkok)

In the screen where you select Source airport. Just right click -> inspect
Change the value field of one of the option tag to the desired airport code. Below example "BLR"

Just select this option and click next. You will find the availability and rest of the options.

Disclaimer: I have NOT personally booked an award flight like this. I just found out it is possible and wanted to share here.

Didn't wanted to put this in public forum as this is more of a trick and not straight forward redemption.

We can book Thai Airways through United since they are part of Star Alliance. On United, you can redeem miles for flights starting from Indian airports as well. Is there any advantage of redeeming the miles on Thai Airways directly?

Infact, I see that the surcharge is lesser as well when booked through United.

Surcharge is low but You require double the amount of miles in United.
27.5k Directly on Thai Airways gets you business class. But its economy in United.

Direct redemption from the airlines always costs fewer airmiles. On pretty much any airlines you check, Vistara, Thai, Singapore etc.

neat trick! its a give an take actually.. you end up paying nearly a economy fare for business class redemption via TG and on United you use double the miles

Cheers for this as im getting ready to book Nov travel to BKK.. did you happen to see the taxes that need to be paid for economy?

6k vs 27.5k miles. That gives miles a very bad value on miles. I'd still pay the additional 6k instead of redeeming 27.5k additional miles.

Yes, go through this post. https://www.technofino.in/community/threads/redeeming-miles-on-thai-airways-royal-orchid-plus.13642/
Economy redemption is a bad value on miles. It depends on the revenue price for the dates you are booking though.

The hack is certainly very good. And TG J is very decent.

HOWEVER... when booking TG - remember their revenue tickets are absurdly low priced as well. BOM - BKK a couple of months out is about 35k each way. Which means you'll be getting much less than Re 1/mile. And that is terrible ROI on J travel.

Moreover, if you calculate rewards at least Rs. 1/mile - you will be at a loss here.

If you can afford it... when flying India - Thailand on TG. Whether it's Y or J - it's much smarter to buy revenue tickets.

There might be some sweet spots in TG's award charts but India-Thailand isn't one of them.

That's the case for most economy fares within the Asiatic regions. It becomes worse when you look at it in contrast to low-cost carriers like Vietjet and Scoot. But for Business/first, you can always find value.

You're better off redeeming your points at a luxury property in BKK. Why would you want to spend 35k points when you can get flights for 8-10k in revenue fares? Moreover, IN-TH flights are typically 3-4 hours direct. Just get yourself a seat in a low-cost carrier like Indigo, and use your points elsewhere.

My comparison was for Business (J). And in TG's case the value is terrible.

You can make the LCC case to almost any destination in the globe. Doesn't compare to a good J/F experience.

That's a matter of personal preference isn't it. Some people prefer J travel others don't get any enjoyment out of it.

At any rate, it's very wrong to compare J of a full fare airline with great food, service, booze, priority everything and lie flat seats to a cramped LCC slim line seat and nothing more over a 4 hour journey.

Also you're very wrong wrong if you think you can get a revenue fare within 10k. You'll need to add extras like luggage, food etc. Not to mention you'll miss out on booze, legroom and comfort.

Personally for me, I would never do an LCC for over 2-2.5 hours.

To each their own. 10K was a stretch, it's actually much less than that. Legroom is an issue but you can always book a bulkhead/exit row seat. I agree that you miss out on food and booze, but I did say that for a 3-hour flight, it won't matter much. At this point, I realise that your views and opinions are very different to that of mine, so it's best we leave it at this. 🙂
