Last week, I went out for dinner at a restaurant inside a 4-star hotel. The bill came to ₹14,081. I gave my Amex Platinum Travel card, but due to a network issue, their POS machine couldn’t connect. The restaurant manager then asked his staff to fetch the POS machine from the hotel reception.
At that moment, an idea struck me, I switched cards and gave them my Axis Atlas. Since the transaction was processed on the reception POS, it got charged under “Front Desk.” As I expected, four days later, I received 705 Edge Miles (5%) without making an actual hotel booking. Interestingly, in a past instance at another hotel restaurant, my dining bill was charged directly under the restaurant MCC, and I only earned 2 Edge Miles.
Lesson learned: a foolproof way to maximize rewards is whenever possible pay your hotel dining bills at the reception instead of the restaurant.
