Unable to add ICICI Sapphiro MasterCard to Google Pay for Tap & Pay using NFC

Hey everyone!

I recently got my ICICI Sapphiro (MasterCard + Amex) credit card through the alumni offer. I tried adding the MC variant to Google Pay for Tap & Pay transactions through NFC using my phone. However, after entering the details and accepting T&C, I'm only getting the option of calling the bank customer care for verification. There is no option for OTP through SMS/email. I tried adding a couple of cards (SBI CC and Axis DC) that my parents have and for both, I got the SMS OTP option and I was able to add them. Has anyone else faced this issue, specifically with Sapphiro MC and GPay? I called customer care several times and they were of no help. I also faced the same issue while adding it to Paytm.

P.S. My phone does have NFC with contactless payments enabled. The mobile number linked to CC and GPay are the same. I've also set the default payment app as GPay.

If I understood you correctly, basically getting a new card (probably with different bin) solved the issue, right?

Mastercard OTP issues were never resolved so I complained to RBI and force RBL Bank to issue their MC card in Visa (they were denying). For IndusInd Visa CC for which verification OTP was not coming, I got the card reissued with new numbers after which OTP came. The BIN (first 6 digits) didn't change as it's the same card reissued.

Okay so I tried adding my Sapphiro to GPay again today and surprisingly, the OTP option was available! But the kicker is that after entering the OTP the card was added but it's still not ready for tap and pay (GPay said it will try adding it in the background), so hopefully it should be resolved in due time. I was able to add my MC debit card successfully though so for now that's my default tap and pay card.

On Paytm however, I was able to add my Sapphiro successfully so finally it looks like the issue is almost resolved.

Thanks to everyone who replied on this thread once again! At the end of the day it just seems to be random glitches on the bank/network's backend, which may or may not get resolved in due time.

Do let me know if you are able to pay to any merchant using your any bank Mastercard CC card. (Of Course using Tap to Pay method)

Sure thing. So far, in my limited experience, tap and pay though phone with Sapphiro MC has worked on Paytm and Innovito POS terminals but not on Pine Labs for some reason. Not sure if it has to do with imobile or the machine itself, especially because tapping the card directly on any machine will almost always work. These terminals were mainly at restaurants like McD/California Burrito or some neighbourhood supermarkets. I'll see if things change now that I can use Paytm for the same.

Hey! So these are the same options I'm getting on GPay and Paytm. The setup on Paytm was successful (entered OTP and the card shows up on the app complete with the digital card number, yet to use it for payment though). But on GPay, after entering the OTP it says "card has been added but setup is taking longer than usual. We will continue trying in the background), so I can see the card on GPay but no digital card number. I verified these by checking the device tokens on the net banking portal.

I don't think the phone model makes a difference unless you're using Samsung Pay but from your screenshot it appears to be GPay only. I'm glad you were able to setup your card (hopefully without much trouble) 🙂

Seems issue with recently issued MC BINs. Seeing a lot of people reporting the same for Infinia or other cards on Reddit too

Yeah that seems to be the case, though I couldn't find related threads on reddit. It seems like the only solution is to wait since I was finally able to add my Sapphiro MC to GPay, almost two weeks after activating it.
