Unreliable experience with UPI (via bank account) lately

Lately I'm observing UPI sometimes can go bonkers. I'm talking about cases where money is debited from bank account but will remain pending. I primarily use gpay but seen this across apps.

For example.. Today early morning, I paid Uber auto via gpay at ~3 AM. Money debited but transaction remained pending.
I waited for 5 mins, nothing changed. I ended up paying cash for the ride and Uber person said he would transfer back the amount if he gets via UPI. I was expecting may be I will receive refund.

However transaction is successful at 5 AM (took more then 2 hours) and the Uber person is not responding.

Any idea what are my options here...

I'm very skeptical about using UPI anymore after such an experience... especially doing UPI at unknown vendors. Is it time to move back to cash or credit card?

I think earlier, when any txn did not go through immediately, it was only cancelled. Then someone in NPCI came up with the "great" idea of delayed clearing, to window-dress the "txn failure" rate. Now even if txn do not immediately go through, they are cleared subsequently. And that is the root cause of all these issues.

Bharat Connect (BBPS) ham bhi hai line mein 👀

They overlooked the user's/ payer's POV.

Boy, it's so unnerving! Fortunately for me, the few hundred UPI transactions that I have done to date, only once it had gone into 'pending'. All others went through.

The one pending case happened in a known restaurant. I had to pay in cash, but they had promised a refund in case of double payment. Thankfully, the transaction ultimately failed, and no money was deducted.

In light of my own experience, I have been quite happy with the convenience of UPI. But perhaps it's time now to go back to cash and cards again.

Talking about cash, is there any advantage to paying from a digital wallet like the Amazon Pay, as opposed to direct UPI debit from a bank?

They omitted to think from user's/ payer's POV.

And why would they, the reason they came up with delayed clearing was to avoid paying back the account holders. Let's say 50Cr people use UPI. 1% of them have an issue (legit or manufacturerd who is to say) and even if average txn value is INR100 thats a lot of money to give back. And even if they don't profit from money in anyway, they reduce the failure rate in their reports and increase the gross transaction amount. Remember robbing one man's money is stealing, robbing the public is called governance, politics, religion you name it....

UPI is intentionally and with malice designed to not get your money back and whatever channels are made available due to legal issues have enough friction to decelerate a spinning neutron star. F upi to the moon and back.

Bilkul sahi pakde 👀

Its such a hilarious thing if you see timelines.
1. Paytm wallet was a breakthrough
2.UPI came and killed paytm wallet
3. Upi introduced mini wallet aka upi lite
4. Phonepe and others are again promoting their wallet now.

So the best wallet got killed to start more wallets now
Seems MDR has started to hit.

I think in cases where wallet provider and Merchant QR provider are same, the txn is settled internally and does not route through main UPI process. During the recent UPI outage, I was able to pay normally to phonepe QR using my phonepe gift card balance, but all other UPI apps failed.

For Uber I do not even remember when I last paid via UPI or any other payment method. I keep buying uber GV at discount and load them in uber wallet.

Sadly the rides in my area will get cancelled if not a cash one.
No one wants to involve uber for payments... it started with Autos and now cabs are also the same in my area.

+1

I don't remember doing any UPI transaction ever between 12-6. I have heard people tell me it's rare to have transactions go to pending state. Idon't have data but I think pending rate for me has been > 1%, which in financial world is extremely high. Add to that the stress of checking multiple times over days.

I use UPI only and only if that's the only option I have. For transportation, during my travel (mostly work related) I use blusmart and keep money in blusmart wallet (loaded through credit card). Especially in NCR region, I don't touch Uber/Ola coz most cabs are incredibly dirty.
Blusmart toh gaya 😐

since the time i saw the email this morning, I was thinking that someone may reply to this post.

On a serious note, I am more than a little worried about my money in Blusmart wallet.

I guess, there is little I can do but wait for 90 days.
Most likely they will refund, can not escape, otherwise they will get into unnecessary trouble, SEBI kam hai ki consumer court ke radar mein bhi jaan bujh ke ayega. 😂

There's an another way to get connected with cs and ask to refund, see if it works for you as well, worked for someone else.

I checked, I only have 2.6k in Blusmart wallet right now, at one point when they were running 10% extra offer, I had about 70k in the wallet (which is like 3 ish month worth).

I did the wallet load coz that way, I make that 10% as reimbursement happens based on invoice and company doesn't mind that I Gained a little by prepaying as it's not causing any loss to the company

Looks like they are providing refunds? Try contacting CC once

This is India bhailog...

1. By design, SEBI and Consumer Courts work on legit and honest businesses. They are inncompetent tax burdens on Indians. And before someone says that SEBI has made markets better than it was before, well just because the amount of shit has reduced doesn't it's not shit. Remember If you mix a bucket of shit with a bucket of cake you get two buckets of shit.

2. There should be actual money to initiate refunds.

3. There is no point in refunding money and no court can do that. All a court can don is liquidate assets which, if there are any, by the time it comes to liquidation will have already been sold out.

4. They can initiate smaller refunds, the oldest scammer/Indian Business playbook, to buy more time to bag as much money as they can.
