A close contact has had an HDFC TIMES Platinum for a decade or so now. The current credit limit on their card is in 7 figures. They do not own a HDFC core card. They are an Imperia banking customer with a sizeable portfolio. They have spoken to at least 4 HDFC RMs over the last 4 years for any HDFC core card. Each one of them told them the same thing - "Unfortunately we cannot issue you one. You will have to close the TIMES Platnium to apply for a core card."

Now they do not want to close the HDFC TIMES Platinum because it is one of their oldest cards. Plus it has a unique superpower of offering 50% discount on BookMyShow even on single tickets which suits them since they tend to watch dozens of movies in a year mostly alone. They end up using their family member's HDFC core card for all other uses.

So, yes, HDFC is weird. A lot of people say escalating to some higher-ups or emailing some grievance email address gets the job done. The contact does not have the time for that. I know ICICI and Axis have no problems in issuing multiple core or co-branded cards to their customers.

I also started with HDFC Times Card. While opening salary account with HDFC the branch representative took an application to split the limit and issued Regalia as the second card. Later my Times Card was upgraded to DCB in 2019 and Regalia to Infinia in 2020. So anything is possible. Yeah but time factor may be at play here.
