What if your CARDS n PHONE are lost while travelling ?

Getting a duplicate SIM. Have copies of Aadhaar n PAN cards ? Will take a few hours to get a replacement SIM n getting it activated. What about a new device. None of the banking Apps will work on a new device just like that.

Need to have all the customer care numbers of all your bank accounts n CCs. In a readily accessable way.
There is a TRAI rule that, after sim replacement (duplicate sim) incoming SMS won't come. for first 24 hours.

For me right now whenever I travel abroad, I set the limit to 5K INR for international transactions. I usually use cash abroad and any rare chance for higher purchase, I increase the limit. This was done due to lack of OTPs abroad. For domestic, I need to do this I guess. Set the limit to something small.

Here's my take on this (hopefully mods don't get offended this time)

I was once travelling with my father and lost my phone. That time I only had 2 bank accounts in same branch as my father. So I told my father and he immediately called the branch manager to temporarily lock the account and disable netbanking and mobile banking.. I remembered one of my Gmail passwords so I used father's phone for find my device and cleared the data on the phone. I didn't have any CC at that time.

Right now, I have opened airtel payment bank on my secondary number where I keep small amount for travel purpose only. That phone is in my pocket. So if phone is stolen then also I am at loss of small amount only

Present scenario: I usually keep 2 wallets and 2 phones with me now. One in pockets and other one deep in the luggage.
The luggage wallet has my important id cards, 2-3 CCs with limits/controls set appropriately, and around 5k in cash.
pocket wallet has voter id card for identity verification purposes, 1 CC with 2K as limit set and only contactless control enabled.

The luggage phone is my primary device which has that sim which is registered with banking applications and aadhar.

You guys discuss among yourselves & someone please summarise the best course of action once all the inputs are received.

Luckily, I never lost them. But, lets imagine a purely hypothetical scenario.

What if all your CCs n phone are lost while you are traveling alone ?

Are you prepared to face it ? What are the sequential steps you take ?

Think, analyse n respond. Don't give impulsive replies. Let's help the newbies.
Wouldn't card protection plan come handy then to block all cards instantly by a single call plus arranging for cash advance for immediate needs ?

These are just waste, they will ask you for proofs of lost & even with your FIR copy if the amount is within 10k then they will try to convince you that you might have done this please remember or something like deviating and blaming you and if the amount is greater than 10k they will put you on hang on call or just will escape from you and also will block you to get reach to them

Did you or any of your friends had experience? I don't think it's that bad.

Even in worst case, you always have a charge back for Visa and MasterCards hence should be safe. Rupay is not so secure in terms of charge back I guess

Below are my personal ideas how to avoid financial loss while travelling internationally on vacation/family trip:

1. Try to book most of the items online to reduce usage of cards upfront like flight, hotels, amusement park/zoo entry fees, shows, historical places, river cruise, cable car etc whenever possible. Just carry one card for offline payment to restaurant/shopping and enough local currencies. Set limit for per txn/day.
2. Have a secondary mobile to use for whatsapp, taking photos/videos. Keep the primary phone which is linked to banks either in locker/suitcase before stepping out of hotel.

1st point is good idea, I'll try to stick as much as possible next time.

2nd point is not very practical for most of the people including me as we maintain just one phone.

thanks, 2nd point is helpful while travelling alone. you can always have a normal phone like nokia (2k-3k) to use primary sim to receive bank/txn sms while travelling. For family, either take your credit card and use wife/kids mobile or vice versa like take your primary phone and use wife's credit card, main idea is to avoid theft/lost for combination of same person's mobile and cards together.

1. Memorize and/or store emergency contact numbers (friends & family, primary bank's whichever we're planning to use in that trip).
2. Better to have temporary 2nd sim that will be always with you during travel (primary should be somewhere safe can use night times when you're not roaming) for that trip.
3. Safely store cash and/or extra cards in luggage (maybe those least used cards, they're helpful in this type of situation - not worriying about rewards but survivability) or somewhere that also won't stolen.
4. Travel insurance (just for additional little help).

additional steps:

- borrow mobile or use public computer, login to password manager, verify contact number of that bank (in that bank website, no need to memorize but have to know where to look, do not trust google numbers), block lost cards.

for internationally, you can get cash by calling friends & family and transfer money to nearest international money transfer agencies with your passport (if that is also lost then we have to take assistance from embassy).

for domestic, ask them to transfer money to someone in that hotel management, get sim replacement by visiting nearest mobile network office with fingerprint, and some cash.

Yes bro, it was one of my friends that i am no longer in connect with but he at that time he just closed that card after paying 35k. so suggesting never go for cpp, they are just shit

Nowadays, no need of copies ....

Just mobile number, aadhar number and (facial/fingerprint) biometric verification.

Airtel postpaid ... provides duplicate Sim at free of cost

Activation within 3 hours upon process.

😅 airtel stores live only on working hours/days

The only BIGGEST drawback - if you had locked your biometrics via mAadhaar n the phone is lost, you need to get this unlocked first BEFORE you try for a SIM Replacement. This is NOT possible - as mAadhaar sends OTP to the registered mobile - despite giving the 4digit security PIN - to unlock biometrics.

So, you need to unlock it BEFORE you travel. Or, convince SIM Provider to issue the duplicate without insisting on biometrics. Is it possible ?

And, there is a 1day cooling period BEFORE the duplicate/replacement SIM starts receiving OTPs....

Ideally there should be a facility to block all cards registered to particular Mobile no. NFC based transaction can be done by any one with cards, unless it is blocked.
I have 4-5 banks cards, and definitely first i will call customer care to block the cards using my card details in cloud through laptop, other's phone etc. Then i will get the new phone and SIM.
In Italy someone stole my laptop bag itself with laptop and wallet (not phone), and i had international transaction disabled on cards that's why i avoided the lost.
