I would say open account offline instead of online. Caution is try to not use too much sbi VDC for initial months, they will flag it out and disable it. There are many threads on TF, new accounts are more prone to it.
After getting your physical debit card / cheque book. You can generate it next day. If you wish, you can close debit card from internet banking itself, but let it deliver first.
Yes, you can use them for recharges or anything and no, you can't convert it.

Now even after saved Rbl Edc, I am not getting accelyst solutions merchant name for paying cc bill. Always getting Freecharge Payment Techno whose MCC is 6012 which I confirmed by calling Rbl after I did a test txn. PFA the ss also. After multiple tries, I switched to Adani gas bill for getting desired merchany name & voila, got it at first attempt itself. Now It seems Edc ka waqt khatam samjho.

Mere paas bhi 2 Edc hai both are just waiting to die at renewal. Hdfc tak vapas se 1% dene laga but Rbl comeback kab karega pata nahi 😂
