Why does account freeze / debit freeze happen?

TF Buzz
In my recent thread about IDFC vs IndusInd account I saw quite a few comments mentioning about debit / account freeze in these banks. Now this got me intrigued. In my years of handling accounts across many banks (SBI, PNB, Canara, Axis, ICICI, CUB, Kotak, AU, UCO etc.) for my family, I have never experienced this kind of phenomenon.

So, is this specific to this two banks or some special activities (like sudden inflow) trigger this kind of freeze on any bank?

Although technically it may happen to any banks account mainly because of kyc issues and suspicious high risk transactions , it seems these two banks (idfc and indusind) are enforcing this more often than not, to the much displeasure of their customers..

In my...
But nowadays, most accounts can be opened online. For example, HDFC savings max account too.
Yes, it's only a suggestion from our side but if u can't go to branch u can still open online but don't make that ac as primary

I opened indusind zero mab ac online 4 yrs ago through vkyc and I did not face any issue till date and my major day to day transactions are done through this ac

Nowadays I am listening that indusind freezing their delite acs

So, decide yourself which way is suitable for u

If you open an account online, the bank may impose stricter restrictions to detect any unusual activity, increasing the chances of the account being frozen.

By the way, I believe HDFC rarely freezes any accounts. Correct me if I'm wrong.
No, I am not going to open account through vKYC after the suggestions from everyone. But, planning to ask bank official to visit home for account opening as my work timings won't allow me to visit bank during official hours. But, you replied that if one opens online accounts like Kotak 811 in that way that will also be considered online account opening. So, I said that now almost all kinds of accounts including HDFC savings max, IndusInd Select etc can be opened through vKYC...

Haha. Actually I searched about similar threads, but couldn't find any general discussion. Hopefully, I am not spamming this forum. 🙏
It's got discussed in threads in length

But to cut short

Idfc - don't do UPI
Imps ,neft all free

Dc transaction ( sometimes it freezes while during transction) but get unblocked once u call customer care

Account freeze - when u do unlimited type UPI ( newbie/ teen experiments)

Indusind - if you rm to sort things ( friendly rm not vampire)

Freeze is only when system sees gross violation
Like too much debit / credit

I opened select account
Did so many cc bill payment worth 4-5 lakh .I didnt face any problem.

I haven't used UPI yet
Bank transfer are smooth

Both are shit bank but u need to choose which shit u are most comfortable with getting max benefits out of it

The above is correct..
Generally self transfers from other bank account won't cause freeze.
Even then, do it in medium sized transactions rather than huge transactions
With IDFC, even self-transfers through UPI into your account, can result in a freeze. I had one in March this year. All the credit transactions were from my Federal Bank or PNB accounts, the BM kept suggesting that it is always better to do NEFT or other netbanking transactions even when it is from self accounts. Ridiculous, but that's what it is.

Why they have a bank then?😂
RBI ko is mamle me kuch karna chahiye.

In terms of freezing or red flag, I believe there is only one difference between accounts opened offline and accounts opened online. For offline accounts, the account will never be freezed for (alleged irregularities in) KYC.

No . . it is called matchmaking by physical evaluation ...

+1 Similarly, if you see the new bank account as a crush or love at first site, you will know how to approach it/her/him. You go slowly in every step to make her / him as your friend, lover, and finally marriage. It takes time, probably months or even years. If you do any illogical things, then there will be a breakup/freezing, that will be hard to resume/unfreeze. Some friends (branch people) may help to resolve the issue at times. If you don't have common friends (or nearby branch), then only God (RBI) can help.

No ,RBI is love guru not god..
Why to disturb God for petty things.

No. It can happen to any bank. There is no transparency on the red flags. If there is a transparency, then our people will find a way to overcome such transparent regulations or rules. So, the red flags vary across banks.

One common reason is... If you mentioned that you earn less than 1lakh per year and then transact 10 lakh per month, then it is a red flag.
Send me 9lakhs and it'll be green flag
