Credit Card's Worst Nightmare Comes True for a Few ICICI Bank Customers - Fraudulent Transactions

Hello TFCians,

Some of our members have reported being affected by international fraudulent transactions on their ICICI Bank credit cards, even though their international transaction setting was disabled.

Here is the original thread by @ssnthegenius

Shocking, right? Same here. ICICI Bank is often considered one of India’s most advanced banks in terms of IT infrastructure. But what happened on the night of 23rd September 2025 raises some very serious questions:

  1. How did fraudsters get customers’ credit card details? Could this be a case of a data leak?
  2. How can an international transaction go through when the card’s international usage was disabled? Isn’t this a major IT failure? The RBI should step in immediately to investigate.
  3. To make matters worse, some customers are reporting poor customer support - one member even had to wait 45 minutes just to raise a dispute!

What Should You Do if This Happens?

As we always focus on solutions, here are some immediate steps you should follow:

  1. Block your card immediately via the iMobile app or by calling ICICI Bank customer care.
  2. Call customer care and raise a dispute, asking them to mark the transaction as fraudulent.
  3. If required by the bank, file a police complaint.

RBI Guidelines – Your Liability

As per RBI guidelines, if you report a fraud within 3 working days, you are not liable for the loss. In this case, since multiple customers are reporting that international transactions went through despite being disabled, this clearly points to an ICICI Bank system failure.

Here are some screenshots related to the case:

Final Advice

If you are an ICICI Bank credit cardholder:
  • Double-check your international transaction setting.
  • If you don’t use your card abroad, keep international usage disabled.
  • If you frequently transact internationally, it might be safer to replace your card.
What do you think, TFians? Is this just a one-off glitch or a deeper issue with ICICI’s IT infrastructure? Should RBI take stricter action here?

And they expect 50K min balance for savings accounts

Setting txn limits to 1K for my non primary cards now....

And here I was worrying about the ishop portal not working for the last 3-4 days.. Good it is not working else icici would not be able to control misuse on their junk portal. I would agree 100% on the wait time .. for reporting the ishop portal not working I spend 15-20 mins on calls and and their dumb IVR just hangs.

I am now happy to use DCB instead of aspiring for EPM.
