Pay taxes without fees (False alarm)

FinGuru

Update - This trick doesn't seem to work. I will confirm once my transaction is settled.

Three days ago, Axis Bank uploaded devaluation PDFs, prompting me to pay 2 lacs as advance taxes. Opting for the Canara Bank payment gateway, I proceeded with the transaction, fully aware that a fee would be levied (0.47%). However, I was taken aback when the fee amounted to Rs. 2146, a little over 1% of the total payment, inclusive of taxes.

Today, I found myself facing another tax payment situation (Self-assessment tax). This time, I decided to explore an alternative payment gateway and chose HDFC PG. To my delight, when making a self-assessment tax payment of approximately Rs. 1.10 lacs, I noticed that no fee was imposed. I paid the exact amount without any additional charges, leaving me super happy.

Please share your experiences.

Wait for transaction settlement and let us know if the charges were still not posted.
There are instances where you don’t get surcharge in OTP amount, but on settlement the the surcharge is added.

HDFC Gateway do not charge at the time of Txn, but recover at the time of Settlement.

I also selected HDFC Gateway for a Property Tax Payment, because no surcharge was reflecting at OTP page.
At Settlement 1.18% extra was deducted.

If I choosed any other Gateway, I could save a few extra bucks.

Do not fall in the trap of HDFC Gateway

Caveat - not sure how long it will work

I have faced similar issue in booking irctc tickets. HDFC gateway shows no extra fees but once the transaction is settled, fees is added to transaction amount itself.

So 1140 payment gets settled as 1158 which is more than 1.5%!

Then it will happen to me also.. It's a foregone conclusion.

Which cards you guys use to pay property/income taxes as Govt transactions dont give RPs for HDFC atleast.??
For now Magnus... can also use SCB for a lower reward / SBI. Infinia won't give points but can be used for milestone achievement.
