Room booking on OYO attracted "rental processing fee" on sbi cashback card.

Had my first run in with the infamous customer care team of SBI cards last week. I got charged 199/- + 35.8/- as fee on a hotel room booking of 1292/- on OYOrooms last week. Obviously, i didn't get 5% cashback on the main transaction either. Screenshot from 2024-03-02 14-52-22.png
I raised a transaction dispute and sbi closed it in a day citing "query doesn't pertain to a transaction dispute, use appropriate channels". Whatever the hell that means. Anyway, i thought of reaching out to the nodal officer and i got a reply that wasn't even relevant to the query. I'm mentally exhausted with their UI, their customer support, this entire MCC related bs and am thinking of closing the card. What do you guys think?

Well this sucks.. Did you book it though OYO's official webiste? Tough luck, banks use the MCC code for CB processing.

Rental MCC was used wherever you booked. So there's no way out for you here.


And transaction dispute is used for fraudulent transactions. That's why they closed the request initially.
 
i used the OYO mobile app. I understand that wrong MCC got reported. I i have sent them a receipt. these charges aren't written in stone, SBI can just as easily reverse them. It's not that it happened that i am disappointed in, it's how SBI has chosen to deal with it.
 
same thing happened with me with world safari ....they didn't reverse saying mcc is of rental...i had booked a hotel by asking hotel to send online link for payment as swipe wasn't working for my card.
 
Goodluck with SBI customer care. I suggest highlighting this on Twitter as well. Although chances are less. Also try to let them know that you are fighting for the unnecessary charges levied in context of false rental payment.
Payment done was related to hotel accommodation, not rent payment.
 
Update: Nodal officer didn't help, asked me to take it up with the merchant. But Oyo didn't charge me excess fee, and it's sure as hell not going to give me 236 because SBI charged me that amount in excess. I have escalated to principal nodal officer, and will escalate to cshead of sbi if needed.

Just thinking, is it possible to file complaint with RBI regarding this as the charges are levied unnecessarily and the response of customer care sounds Robotic

I don't think RBI is going to intervene. I also checked other banks' rental fee and every single one of them have 1%/2% + gst as rental fee, not that it applies in my case. SBI is the only one that charges 199/- + gst. https://x.com/CardMavenIn/status/1767441527096176688?s=20
 
AVOID PAYING ADVANCE TO OYO ROOMS

Cheaters. Booked 2 Super Deluxe Double Rooms at Varanasi close to the main temple n paid full amount for 10 days about 3 months in advance. Marriage season. Got SMSs informing cancellation of rooms at 8pm - when we were in the Airport - on the day of our travel to Varanasi from Delhi.

When landed in Varanasi at 11pm, neither the hotel or the OYO guys in DEL/Gurgaon helped us - even with some alternative stay options.

It took 4 more months for getting back the refunds. Had to lodge complaint with the local Police (known people) against OYO for cheating us. Obly then, I got my money back.
