2000 Rupee notes to be phased out

Even then up till sept, its still valid tender. People legally cannot refuse it.
People already started refusing it the moment this was announced or they came to know about it. 'Legally' yes, no one can refuse, but 'practically'...... we all know that it is as good as invalid in the market.

It is quite one thing for a community like ours which holds multiple cards and do online transactions and mostly stay in metros and tier 1 cities to talk about this not affecting us. We know what is the penetration of credit cards in our country and how many people actually use internet and mobile banking. While it is true that the use of UPI and wallets have increased manifold in the last few years and it has penetrated deep inside the country even in remote areas, it still does not have universal usage and many people, especially the elderly, are not able to use it. Also, with the use of UPI and wallets, frauds have also increased a lot and it has mostly been targeted at people who are most economically vulnerable.

I am not saying for once that because of the above, such measures should not be taken. Unless hard decisions are taken, we will never progress and move forward and there will never be a perfect time to take such decisions as there will always be some people who will be adversely affected. Such decisions must be taken, but we must be aware that there are people, apart from just hoarders of black money, who will be adversely impacted, who are genuine, hard working people and who do not deserve hardships, but are facing it as a price for the nation to move forward. While taking these decisions, it is the responsibility of people like us, who are even the slight bit more aware, more knowledgeable and more privileged, to help and support the others who do not have such privilege and create a conducive atmosphere for such decisions to succeed and include everyone in that success. It is easy and simplistic to just say that it is a good move and will impact only black money hoarders is like taking the easy way out.

Sorry for the longish message and if it felt preachy, but just wanted to share my heartfelt thoughts.

Three months is a long time. If you are holding lots of currency of 2K, and its all genuine, you can relax and deposit at bank, and withdraw at will. Hopefully this message gets across

Well, I mentioned that it is not being accepted anymore in the market. Didn’t mention about depositing in bank. Of course there will be no issues in depositing any amount in the bank as long as it is genuine.

well the banks are not asking to fill any forms or any ids, anyone can get any amount of notes exchanged through their family and workers.

One of my relatives just discovered six 2000 rupee note in the shelf.. Any chances of redeeming it now 🙂

Try this. Seems working, my friend did this way recently in Nov 1st week.

I contacted the post office and they said they are accepting the notes but not sure if RBI would accept it. And also they claim no accountability of the amount received. Is there a helpline number for ensuring RBI still accepts the notes through post?

That's the only option left now. Need to take the risk as nothing can be done. Both are government agencies.

Try going to RBI regional offices if they are available nearest to your location.

Is there a limit to which we can courier the 2000 notes to RBI ? Also is there any special type of courier type which we have to avail through Indian post ?

Post office has a process for sending 2000 notes to RBI. They will provide you a form to fill and notes will be insured as well (100-150 charge per 2000 note)
