I have purchased mobile phone from store using Airtel Axis Credit Card with Rs.36000. when I got the statement, they have tagged this transaction under utility and not awarded any cashback (1%) for that transaction . On enquiring they are telling this transaction comes under utility with the MCC 4812.

On searching 4812 MCC on internet, it seems rightly under mobile equipments etc category. is axis Bank right on putting this transaction under utility section and not awarding any rewards on that?

There've been plenty of complaints on the internet with stores using 4812 MCC and Axis classifying it as utility and denying points/miles/cashback on their cards- it's even happened for Iphone purchases.

You can probably try your luck e-mailing them invoices and ask for 1%. Most folks haven't been successful (going by past posts), but you can try.

Btw, Axis also charges a 1% fee for utility spends over 25K on this card iirc.
