Beware when you have eSIM

For iPhone it works without any problems, I’m using eSIM from last 3 years i guess, so far no problems. My primary sim which is linked to every bank including Aadhar is an eSIM. So go ahead. But kinda bad news is Airtel only offers eSIM for postpaid customers. So if you want prepaid eSIM go for Jio
Thats not true... My prepaid Airtel Sim is esim

I use only Google Pixel phones.
I had Jio physical SIM and Airtel eSIM.
Both PrePaid.

Pixel 4a to 6a - no issues. Butter smooth migration. Never bothered about Aadhaar or anything. Because, it was done here in HYD. Entire migration of SIMs n 125 Apps took less than 1 hour. Activation/device authentication took each App's normal time. Nothing unusual. Vey happy.

In 09/2024, Pixel 6a to Pixel 9Pro - in USA. Jio n all other Apps migrated without any issue. Except Airtel eSIM.

AIRTEL'S ESIM WILL NOT ALLOW DEVICE CHANGE OUTSIDE INDIA.

Despite changing local carriers, or using VPNs, or contacting AirTel... no luck. Had to wait till we returned to India in mid-Nov. Once we are here, it's a matter of 2-3 hours max for the eSIM to migrate to the new device.

So, DO NOT ATTEMPT MIGRATING TO NEW DEVICE IF YOU ARE USING AIRTEL's eSIM.

So airtel prepaid users can't get eSIM?
I was planning to get esim fir my airtel number.
Now it seems not possible as of now.

Now what to do when the delivery guy wont give you the new phone to transfer old esim. Where to keep this esim (Time between old phone erased, verified by delivery guy, new phone handover, setup) and now from where to get this esim from thin air?

PS: This is the question in my head.
Strong advice: First get a physical SIM or keep Adhaar unlocked so that biometrics verification will work at telecom store.

Note: If you would have taken the original sim without reference to Adhaar, you can work without any Adhaar linkage at the telecom store - I would recommend visit the store and cross verify

thats why I keep my primary sim as physical and secondary sim as esim.
My wife converted her primary to esim so that while we are traveling abroad, she can get a local sim to use in physical slot. I am planning to do the same once I change my phone.

Point being, for anyone who travels abroad and needs significant amount of data (more than what Roaming plans provides), the only option is to keep primary phone as esim unless they are ok switching off the primary phone

When you are abroad, AVOID using any local physical SIM (or even eSIM) on your main phone (with your primary SIM - Either physical or eSIM). Doing so, makes almost all your banking/payment/finanvial Apps not working. Almost all of them need number/device authentication again.

So, carry another blank phone n use it for any local SIM(s).

NEVER disturb your main/primany phone or SIM or eSIM. Don't touch that combo. You would be wasting a lot of time, money n effort -some Apps's device authentication don't work abroad (blocking IPs).

Thanks for the advice, appreciated

Can you please elaborate a little more. Let's say my primary phone number is A which is esim and a secondary number B which is physical. Now, if we remove sim B and install sim C in say Singapore, why will that cause apps linked to sim A (which is still an esim in phone) to stop working?

Also any particular apps that fail in these scenarios? In the last few trips atleast HDFC & Axis Bank apps worked fine.

I have ESIM Airtel n a physical Jio in slot 1. Since many years. Travelled extensively in Europe (14 countries) n USA, besides UK. I use only 1 phone - always Google Pixel (then 4a5g, 6a n now 9Pro) - with over 120 Apps.

In almost all trips, whenever I tried to change ANY combination - physical SIM or eSIM - many Apps stopped n require a device authentication - which may or may not happen.

Carry a simple blank phone n use it for housing any local SIM. You mainly use a local SIM for incoming calls n SMS from friends n relatives - n not for doing trxns. Right ?

If you change phones, ensure the following before you reset old phone:

1. Keep your Adhaar biometrics enabled!
2. Try to get the initial esim without using Adhaar - but a different address proof
3. If your watch is esim enabled, don't sync it to new phone

Trust me, it will save a fortune...

So, my story:
-I upgraded to Apple 16 pro, finally!
-Surrendered my old phone and the delivery guy didn't hand me the new phone unless he fully verified and did a reset of old phone
-In the process, my esim got lost and there clever part of me thought I will go to Jio store and sort it out
-Little did I remember that the younger clever me had disabled my Adhaar biometrics earlier due to security reasons
-My Apple Watch Ultra 2 had esim enabled but since the bluetooth was on, it seamlessly synced with my new phone and esim was auto deleted from the watch too- so now, no way to get messages!
-Solution: I need to get my mobile number changed in my Adhaar by visiting the adhaar centre (no other option) - then enable biometrics and then get the esim back!

Phew!
In your experience, top 3 benefits which you felt using esim compared to physical?

Benefits: None.

Convenience: I wanted a secondary SIM for network backup when my primary network fails. I chose Jio and Vodafone because this combination works better than Jio and Airtel. However, Vodafone doesn’t provide an eSIM for their prepaid SIMs and thus, had to get esim for my primary number!
