Yes, I have 3 accounts in IDFC. If they don't allow 2 single accounts, then add yourself as a secondary holder with your mother as the primary.

Actually I forgot to mention that the old account was opened under pmjdy scheme. Can my mother open another account because customer care says yes? But I am still sceptical about going to the rural branch and returning empty handed if they deny.

Yes, you can open another account. I suggest opening a fresh account in the rural branch and close the PMJDY after opening the new account.
If you close before opening the new account, then the system will throw an error and you have to open via physical form.
No one will deny, just don't mention that she already has an account in the other branch.
