Buying and importing laptop into India

TF Buzz
Hi guys

I am willing a buy a laptop from Nigeria as the same laptops available there are comparatively cheaper due to the currency difference (1 Nigerian Naira = 0.087 Indian Rupees). However, I need two things to consider:

1) find a retailer who ships internationally or find an international shipping company.

2) handle the import and custom duty charges.

According to my calculations, even after the taxes, the imported laptops will still be comparatively cheaper.

Is there any company who handles international shipping as well as help in customs clearing in India? How do I make the process (buying a laptop in Nigeria and importing it into India) easy for myself? Are there any companies or dealers to approach? I would like to have some tips and advices from the people who have bought previously any items internationally and imported them into India.

Laptop means MacBook or any other? Why from Nigeria specifically, why not from other countries with low taxes?

I haven't decided the model yet but I have specific models in mind of brands like Razer, Lenovo and ASUS. I am not interested in buying Mac currently. I just chose Nigeria because our currency is bigger than them so laptops appeared to be cheaper there. I am a novice in these things and never bought any international item before. I do not have any idea about the taxes in the other countries and I am very much open to the idea of buying from other countries as well to minimize the cost.

I want to buy the laptops at the minimum costs and have minimum import/custom duty.

Which country offers high end laptops at cheapest rates and has minimum taxes for importing into India or offers international shipping?

Unless Nigeria makes or assembles laptops, how can it offer a better value?

I mean if Nigeria only imports laptops then, the cost of import to Nigeria is already added to their price. It may be lower than India (due to low import taxes there), but when we buy from Nigeria, the overall cost may be the same as buying in India.

I know many people bought a lot of small stuff like routers and modems mainly from China by letting them print a substantial lower price to avoid import costs in India. However, with a laptop, it is impossible to quote a lower price to get a lower import tax.

Currency exchange rate has nothing to do with product being expensive or cheaper. Iranian currency is the weakest in the world, that doesn't mean things are cheap there.

If you really want to buy electronics, unless you buy high end product worth few lakhs, doesn't make sense to go through import and customs hassle.

If you want to buy expensive gadgets, go to Malaysia/Thailand/Dubai etc and bring it yourself. You'll get VAT refund. Also, in this case, you don't have to worry about customs because you'll use it for personal purpose so no taxes. Your flight cost would easily get recovered with the amount you'll save.

Are u looking to buy gaming laptops?
Tell me your budget.
Btw dont do this. The most cheapest way to do this is to have someone get it from USA. Ex: your friend coming to india anyway so he gets it for u.
The only con is he has to bring it as personal laptop, so it will be like open box.

I am looking to buy under or near Rs. 1.5 lacs. However, the required features are: 18 inch size, i9 13900HX, Nvidia RTX 4090 12 GB GDDR6. I know these laptops cost so much in India that is why I am looking for cheaper means including buying in second hand in good condition.

Spending that much over a second hand laptop from a foreign country is not advisable because theres a greater risk of having to return products. The only way to do this is have a friend in USA who could buy and verify on your behalf and u pay him at the end. Youd have to coordinate with him.
Even then, you never know when second hand models starts performing poorly. If youre spending that much better to go with 1st hand, if not 4090 then maybe 4080. If its not urgent, wait for deals to come through and u can get first hand for 1.6-1.7 lakhs (for 4080) or less.

Theres already a 4080 for 1.65 lakhs first hand but remember to check laptop specific reviews. Legion seems much better but not currently on deal
