Does RAM upgrade make windows faster?

Hi everyone,
I have a Lenovo laptop with i3 7100u and it already has a SSD but only 4GB RAM.
I mainly used it for my classes and for web surfing.
Lately the chrome has started to feel sluggish and I am not able to watch 1080p youtube as the laptop starts to lag and frames get skipped, hence I was looking to upgrade my RAM from 4GB to 8GB by adding another 4gig stick.

Would this help in my case?
Please let me know.

Thanks

Generally, RAM upgrades help. However, please check if a spare RAM slot is available? If not, you have to replace the 4GB RAM to 8GB or better to 16GB.
BTW, your CPU seems a little old. Check for compatible RAM before buying one.

It will definitely help , 4GB is very very basic..
Depending upon your motherboard, you should add / upgrade another 16 GB.
Give us your laptop model, then our blokes will suggest you the best upgrade path

Yes chrome will be faster as it's memory hungry browser.

Meantime you can switch to brave or firefox for more smoother experience.
If that Doesn't works go for an upgrade.

Yes but not expect too much for 4gb to 8 gb upgrade for a old system.

System performance depends on combination of CPU+ram+storage (SSD)

Currently I am using an old core-i3 6006 based laptop running win10. it came with 4GB RAM and traditional hard disk. I have upgraded to SSD and added a n 8GB RAM. So, it is 12GB RAM. It works perfectly for regular use like browsing and watching movies.

Answer is Kinda No, coz even if you upgrade RAM, the system might not utilise it completely. it depends on the processor, for i3 7th gen 4GB RAM is more than enough coz it only got 2 Cores. Stop Using Chrome. Try Microsoft Edge. Edge is chromium based browser, so it got all the features of chrome. All you have to do is change default search engine from bing to google. Even if you change old RAM with New RAM higher speeds & timings, your CPU won’t match it, cpu will utilise what it needs from the immediate memory. So upgrade to 35K decent laptop during these sales

One of my friends is using an I5-5200U processor laptop with 4Gb ram and 500gb ssd and is a programmer and uses some heavy softwares too. I am in a dilemma whether to get another 4gb ram or an 8gb one.
What would you guys suggest?

Best Solution will be installing Linux, like Ubuntu. Its like giving new life to your old laptop. You can do all basic tasks without any issues. Ubuntu supports chrome Firefox(pre installed) & all most all web browsers. So you wont miss much

This is my area of expertise. Let me guide you on how to troubleshoot this issue on your own.

If you notice your system or software lagging, follow these steps:

  1. Open Task Manager and check the CPU, RAM, and Disk usage percentages.
  2. The component with usage near 100% is likely the source of the lag.
Here's what you can do based on which component is the issue:

  • CPU: If CPU usage is consistently high, upgrading to a new computer may be the best solution.
  • RAM: If RAM usage is high, you may be able to upgrade. If your laptop has an extra RAM slot or if the RAM isn’t soldered, consider adding an 8/16/32GB module (if supported by your laptop/motherboard).
    • If you are adding a new RAM module alongside an existing one, ensure it matches the frequency of the old RAM for optimal compatibility.
  • Disk (SSD): If Disk usage is high and you're using an SSD, consider checking its read/write speed using a tool like CrystalDiskMark. If your SSD is underperforming or outdated, you can upgrade to a faster SSD (e.g., an NVMe SSD) if your laptop supports it. Faster SSDs can improve overall system responsiveness significantly.

Yes sir, I bought this laptop in may 2019 and upgraded to ssd on my own in 2021 and this had one spare slot for ddr4 and currently has preinstalled soldered ddr4 2133mhz 4gb.

I am going to buy skhynix off amazon. Will it be fine as this already has the same one I guess.
Could find any stick online with same CAS latency though.

I have this laptop sir minus the processor.
Actually there is only one empty slot and I guess for this i3 that much RAM might be overkill, I just watch CA tuitions on this.
I am only going to use it as my primary machine for the next one year only, after which I am looking to upgrade to some Ryzen 5, which would serve me for another 5-6 years comfortably.

I used to use those browers, but now I am kind of used to chrome and its account integration for bookmarks and stuff, hence can't change browsers now.

For upgrade download cpu-z application check the frequency of the current ram and get the 2 stick of similar configuration and frequency. 2x8 preferred!
Yup I check it sir, can only use one empty slot as another one is already soldered, that's why thinking of getting another 4gb as it be enough for me for a year or so, plus will comfortably run in dual channel.

Got it sir.
the issue is, I liked an MSI laptop during this sale for only 33k which has Ryzen 7530u, but this season I am not in a position to comfortably upgrade this as I am still not having any serious issues which would make me angry.
I am looking for the cheap/free upgrades for this laptop as spending much money on this won't be worthy as I'll upgrade next year.

Will try Edge as you have suggested. And also doing a fresh windows install (as it has always helped me with performance.)

Thank you.
