Just for fun: when did you get your first credit card and any experiences you would like to share.

I got mine about 25 years back. It was a Citibank credit card and they offered it on the college campus while we were still graduating. Those days card readers were physical machines where they would take imprints of the embossed credit card numbers (that's why credits card till recently had those) and ask you to sign for verification.

IRCTC was not born then. The VT (CST) station in Mumbai had 2 ticket counters which would only accept credit cards and 50 regular counters. We used to commute to VT to book our train tickets to avoid long queues 🙂

My first CC : FK AXIS CC
My cibil was not great, and I was a student. I was a FK customer since 2014 and had pay later for over a year with 5k limit. I applied all popular card and failed. But due to my love for online shopping I would shop around 1-2 lakh every year consistently on FK and as a geek for mobiles my friends used to order through my account every year in college. Also all major appliances and small or big purchases happened thorough FK. In OCTOBER 2022 I had applied for FK AXIS CC through Flipkart and surprisingly it got accepted and I got card with 21k limit ( though low but there's a start atleast). Later I got to know Flipkart suggested my name for the card based on how old my account was and my spending as the same card was rejected through Cashkaro. If you have an old account you can get FK AXIS CC as it's not a guaranteed method but worked for me. Now they increased limit to 41k in 6 months only. I'm happy that FK AXIS CC has some decent reward system and I got it unsecured as my first card.

Many years back when I was doing my PhD, I used to receive my fellowship in Canara Bank. The manager had taken approval for giving unsecured cards to students who received their fellowship at that branch. Using the BMs discretion I got my first card from Canara Bank with a limit of 50K. I had submitted my admission offer letter, UGC notification and bank statement for my first card. Using that card I got other cards. I told them that I need the card to book flight tickets for foreign conferences and that convinced them.

My first credit card was
HDFC Gold Credit Card in 2007

but it was blocked due to no payment in 2013,
In 2018 I was cleared all past due and got the NOC.
Currently I am hold the most of all the cards but don't have HDFC. Is there any way to get the hdfc card ? Please any one can help to get the HDFC cc.

Thank you.

2020 - Kotak Aqua Gold on FD with limit of 12,000. I was a student at that time enrolled in 2nd year of Engineering and recently got to know about CIBIL Score and wanted to improve it as I unknowingly gave consent to Kotak whenever they call for Credit Card and they kept applying resulting in 10 enquiries already. All 9 times it was rejected, I had score of 712 due to PayTM Postpaid.

Now I hold 17 credit cards.

Story Time

My friends and I were roaming in Central Mall when one SBI guy approached us for a SBI Central Credit card. We applied through him giving all the details.

After some days we all received rejection mail from SBI. The reason for my friends was no CIBIL score. I was hearing CIBIL for the first time. My rejection was because I don't hold any other credit card, told to reapply once I have any other credit card. When I checked my CIBIL, it showed 793 thanks to an old Gold loan my parents took through my SBI account.

Then we started searching for a Bank that will give us a credit card and luckily found HSBC. They gave all of us credit cards (even to my friends without CIBIL score).

The limit I received was 36000. The same month I used it to 98% of the limit and brought down my CIBIL from 793 to 761.

After one month received a call from SBI saying that you are now eligible for the credit card. Took the SBI Central card as my second card.

Don't we all have a mall credit card experience!
A few years back I had a chance of getting an SBI card at big bazaar (RIP). But didn't want it at that time (don't remember if it was LTF).
Fast forward to 2023, My SBI Cashback CC application gets rejected 🙁

Credit Hunger Man 🙂

HDFC Moneyback credit card - I didn't even apply, HDFC automatically sent me the card when opening a salary account. I was reluctant about using credit card during my early days so it was collecting dust. I started very late with credit card usage, only during covid lockdown I applied for Amazon Pay ICICI. Slowly realized what I've missing for so many years. Now I have 5 credit cards.

My first salary account was created in 2016 and it is ICICI bank. Then they offered me platinum credit card for free with 45000 limit (My Salary was 15000 back then). That was my first card.

This guy is basically Gandalf

My first credit card was from Bank of America in 1999. It was a secured card with a limit of $500. Unfortunately, I didn't manage it too well and it was closed by the bank after about 8 months due to late payments and being over the limit each month. At one point, I even used it for over $2,000 on a trip to England and Ireland as there were no direct debit machines in those days. The merchants took the impression of your card with a machine on carbon paper and then submitted it to your bank! It was very foolish as Bank of America had a programme where they would make your card unsecured after a year. Eventually I established excellent credit history there and my score was 830 plus.
In India, my first card was also secured in 2021 and had a limit of around 9 lakhs from Yes Bank. I closed it after about 6 months as I had gotten a few unsecured cards by then.

Purely off topic, if comfortable, what is your research area?
