Need advice: buy a car-sedan

Looking to buy a car-sedan. This would be our first car. My wife would be the primary driver. I am hoping I would be keen to learn car driving in the future. Have driven Activa till now.

Mostly will be using in the city for errands and sometimes outstation trips. We are not sure yet how much we would be using the car.

Mostly will be used by me and my wife with my wife being the talented driver in the family 🙂

On road Budget - Little flexible - 8 - 12lacs
City - Bangalore

1. Petrol or diesel?
2. Need a decent boot space
3. Smooth Car steering
4. Inclined towards automatic. Any additional maintenance cost attached to automatic cars?
5. Maintenance cost budget?
6. Any other points to consider.

We don't have any idea about cars. Open to any suggestions/advice which can help our buying process smooth and cost effective.

in bangalore and first car, i would always suggest to get a used one.
Use it for a couple of years and then actually get a brand new one. the roads and traffic is bad, pretty sure card will have dents within few days of purchasing especially at ORR.
Yes, your maintenance cost will be slightly higher but you can learn and improve driving skills then later go for a better card with higher budget.

As you said you live in Bangalore and look forward to learning to drive as well amaze cvt will be your best bet.
The new one has just come out so don't buy used as it'll be your first one and they could be issues associated with used vehicles which might be expensive.

Also service cost of these vw group cars is very expensive.

Buy petrol cvt and there is not much increment in cost as regards to service cost over manual.

And as far as the maintenance cost is concerned, max 10K a year approx (considering everything remains fine with the vehicle, most probably will be the case) will be more than enough.

Sedans are becoming extinct in Indian Auto Industry. So let's look at the options you have.

- Maruti Dzire
- VW Virtus / Skoda Slavia (These are performance Sedans more than a comfortable choice as these are Turbo Petrol)
- Hyundai Aura
- Honda Amaze

If you want less maintenance go for Maruti Dzire (This is also AMT not Automatic) and Honda Amaze. Good performance car (Slavia or Virtus). Hyundai Aura doesn't have Automatic transmission it have AMT (Automated Manual Transmission - So not recommended)

If you are fine with driving small SUV's you have bunch of options to chose (Which I personally recommended - because they are more practical for BLR traffic and roads)

There are B2 sedan like Suzuki dezire,hyundai aura and Honda amaze
1. New Dezire - marutis reliability, 5 star safety, No proper Automatic, 3 pot engine
2. New Amaze - Hondas reliability, good safety, CVT Automatic, 4 pot engine
3. AURA - less reliable and less safer than above 2 cars, no proper automatic

I agree so much. For many folks, that is important criteria now compared to 5 or 8 years back. Also, now good part about Mahindra and Tata cars are that safety is feature irrespective of price segment. Yay Indian cars manufacturers.

I hope tata soon replaces amt with dct as they're doing with their lineup. Would increase the comfort of the vehicle.

I would also wish that. But on other hand, there has been improvement in AMT itself. 2023 Tata Punch AMT felt better than Maruti AMT I drove in about 2018. Both of them I have driven like less than 20 km. Still not comparable to DCT that I drive regularly.
