Scam by Icici bank, Emeralde CC

Hello everyone,

I wanted to share my experience with ICICI Bank regarding an issue with the Emeralde Credit Card offer I received and seek advice on how to proceed.

In December 2024, I received an offer in the iMobile app for the ICICI Emeralde Credit Card as Lifetime Free (LTF). I was shocked because it’s a premium card, and currently, I already hold the following LTF ICICI credit cards:

ICICI Coral LTF

Coral Rupay LTF

Sapphiro Dual LTF

Amazon Pay CC

Since the app didn’t allow screenshots, I took a picture of the offer using another phone (thankfully). Excited, I shared it with friends and also called ICICI customer care to confirm. They told me:

> “If the offer is showing in the app, then it is valid. However, we cannot check what offers you see in your app from our end.”

The next day, I reconfirmed with customer care, and again, they assured me:

> “If the offer is showing in the app, you are eligible for it.”

So, I applied, got the card, and was not charged any joining fee initially. However, after one statement cycle, at the end of January, I was suddenly charged a joining fee. I immediately called customer care and raised a dispute.

Their response? They claim nothing can be done, even after escalation. They even stated that their RBI executive confirmed this decision and that I would have to pay the fee.

This is extremely disappointing, and I feel misled. I am considering raising a complaint with the RBI Ombudsman, but I need advice on the best way to approach this.

Has anyone faced a similar issue with ICICI or other banks?

What’s the best way to escalate this effectively?

Any insights on how to draft my RBI Ombudsman complaint?

Any help would be appreciated! @TechnoFino @bhavyegoel @Subhankar @ashwink @SSV @BVC @jatinkrmalik @telescope

Send email to PNO, or directly file complaint with RBI BO with all the proofs.

@sjmajumder is the veteran here to help you out.

It’s a good practice to get a email confirmation from the helpdesk on the joining and annual fees before activating the card. However sometimes even that is not honoured as it happened for me with Kotak bank. Escalation to PNO and RBI is the way to go.

Mail to PNO and threaten them if this issue is not resolved in a week, will then officially raise this with RBIO for the mis selling of the product
Bro read the email in ss they are openly telling to raise the issue with RBI ombudsman telling their internal ombudsman officer has confirmed nothing can be done what baffles me is that it looks like they are not even worried that customer might go to RBI so settle it internally

Absolutely never going to apply any card again without written confirmation by the bank

Have you taken recorded video while applying? It happened with me as well.

Registered complaint with RBI as well with all proofs and screenshot but ICICI only refunded joining fees and closed that card.

Frim that day, I got lesson to record video as well of offer while applying. RBI did nothing even with proofs after ICICI refunded fees, no compensation nothing.

ICICI has this reputation of charging for some users. RBI escalation should help you I guess. Even our admin have similar issues with Emeralde but that’s related to spend waiver. Try approaching RBIO with all the documents and screenshots.

My question is will they allow me to keep the card or will they refund the fee and close the card?

If joining fee/ annual fee is not mentioned in the welcome letter, then I get the email confirmation about the same before activating the card. I did it for HDFC Swiggy and Sapphiro last year even though both were shown LTF while applying.

Something is wrong ..... The Emerald credit card is only available in Visa Infinite, not in Visa Platinum

File a complaint with the RBI Ombudsman—that’s the only place where you might get real help. There’s no point in wasting time elsewhere. I’m also planning to file a complaint with the RBI myself. ICICI Bank has truly troubled everyone, and they need to be taught a lesson.
I am so pissed this time I am not looking for just fee reversal I want the compensation for sure
