The Power of Credit Card Chargebacks: How Amex Sets the Gold Standard

@TechnoFino Was Mr. X able to keep using his Amazon account after the chargeback or was his account banned?

I have read that many merchants can ban your account for a successful chargeback. I have read about Uber, Sony, Steam, and even Google and Apple doing this. It seems that a chargeback can be the end to your business relationship with that merchant.

@HumorSimpson a new trend of mr x has begun after mrs x left. isn't that right

Amex and apple analogy doesn't hold true here. Amex is miles better

1.Holding an amex card doesn't stop you from owning and enjoying all other cc like an apple product does
2. You don't need to knowingly overpay to enjoy amex.. Just get an mrcc or another cheap amex card and use it when you want to enjoy amex
You don't overpay but the merchant does. A lot of merchants operate on single digit margins and paying AmEx 2-5% of that is just not an option. AmEx's argument to the merchant is that "We bring the rich customers who will buy more from you." Any reasonably minded trader will say "Hardly any customer in India chooses a merchant based on whether it accepts AmEx or not.".

yes you are right but again the point still holds...everyone should opt and keep an amex card ready for cases (even if once in 2 years-3 years) they need to make a transaction with unreliable merchant, unreliable country?, unknown reasons/category, whatever the reason...why rule out any option if you qualify and it is freely available to you

Does Amex have any "LTF for all" card? :hehe:

Incorrect statement made that Amex closed it within minutes in customer favour. Looks to me it is just a temporary credit and it clearly says in last line it may be rebilled if the merchant comes back with a valid proof

Hey TFCians,

The credit card chargeback system is one of the most important and useful features of a credit card. Whenever you face an issue with a merchant, and the merchant fails to resolve your issue in time, the chargeback system can step in to protect you.

Here’s an example:

On November 11, 2024, Mr. X ordered 10 units of Apple AirPods using an Amex credit card. All items were delivered on November 12, 2024, but Mr. X found that all 10 units were damaged. He immediately contacted Amazon, which arranged a return pickup on November 14, 2024, for a refund.

Mr. X returned all the units on November 14, 2024, and waited until November 30, 2024, for the refund. Despite contacting Amazon multiple times, they failed to issue the refund even by December 17, 2024.

Finally, Mr. X filed a chargeback with Amex, uploading the return slip as proof. And guess what? Amex resolved the dispute in Mr. X's favor within minutes!

This is the power of the credit card chargeback system.

While the chargeback system is incredibly useful, it’s often underutilized. However, not all card issuers are as proactive as Amex. This is why I always say that no credit card issuer in India can match the level of customer service provided by Amex.
It's an American company, so obvious. They put customers satisfaction on paramount.

When they provide a temporary credit, they don’t close the case immediately. In this particular instance, Mr. X uploaded proof of return and email communication with Amazon. This prompted Amex to close the dispute quickly and credit the money in the customer’s favor.

However, there is a possibility of rebilling if Amazon submits proof showing that the refund has already been processed.
I have personally seen cases where amex took 30 days to investigate and close the case.

I'm surprised anyone had to dispute amazon.com for a refund. I've never had an issue getting a refund for return. In fact, there have been many times, they refunded me if I had an issue and let me keep/dispose the product as I wish.
