Amex plans to start 2024 with a grand reward of 1,35,000 MR points when upgrading to a Platinum Charge card.

Users currently holding Amex Platinum Travel, Amex Platinum Reserve and Amex Gold Charge card are getting these offers.
You can see it in the app, refer to the screenshots attached below.

For the heavy spenders, this is a great deal since you get multiple loyal hotel loyal memberships and do anything concierge service.

If you don't spend a lot of money but feel the points can help, you can still upgrade for the points.


If you don't need the points, you can get the Amex Platinum Travel or the Amex MRCC card which remains the best card for monthly spends between 6K-40K.

Amex doesn't have any such cooling period as far as I know.

Cooling period is 90 days I was told by amex rep else they will reject however depends on your lady luck

yes the base 1L MR point comes directly as soon as you start using the card. The bonus MR points will follow basis fulfilling the spend criteria

90 days of cooling period is from last approved application and not for card closures.

No not like that I had only one card smart earn after one year I received upgrade offer to plat travel. Last month I closed smart earn and received mrcc. Effectively I still have two cards only now.

So when you upgraded smartearn to PT.
Smartearn remained active along with new PT

My 2 cents on upgrade offer.
Amex replaces old card with the new one , all card details including card number etc will remain the same.

So if you are getting upgrade offer on plat travel , your plat travel would get closed and replaced by Plat charge.

not really i got my plat charge via upgrade on my plat travel.it came as a separate new card.so i am having both cards now.

The requisite criteria is the 50K spend within 60 days and then you will receive the 35K bonus points. 🙂

There is no way amex approves all the applications right? I get 70k is a huge price to pay but 135k points breaks it even if you have 1 single luxury vacation planned in 2024. Decent percentage of people who hold Plat travel might end up upgrading if they realise MR points? or maybe this is confirmation bias and i am overestimating ccgeek community.

Their concierge is already shit, if they approve this many they cannot handle the volume and will go down the axis way. Amazing i guess.

Amex makes 70K per application so even if they approve everyone, they're still profitable.

Heck, I would think they want everyone to apply and get approved so that their market share of Platinum card goes up!
And while you might think that every Amex user has received this offer based on this thread but you'll be surprised how few people have actually gotten it.

Very rarely Amex rejects Plat Charge applications.

You can apply only if you have received this upgrade offer.
And since you already hold plat charge , you won't get this offer and might need to wait few months to get an upgrade offer on your other cards.

With Amex plat charge , best is to cancel and reapply than renew.

When you compare it like that, there's not much difference.

But people have been getting 100k points throughout the year so compared to that, 135K looks like a good number.

Correct, you can either use a referral or you can use the upgrade offer. Both of them cannot be combined.

I mean if they stop plat charge, what else is left? Centurion how many ppl would even own or travel through delhi airport after paying 8L

I think they might stop access to centurion & delta lounges outside India as the ones in the US are already crowded and might restrict India plat charge access to Delhi and Mumbai lounges
