UPI Scan & Pay Surcharges on Fuel transactions: Experiences with Different RuPay Cards

Hey everyone,
I've been doing some digging into fuel payments using UPI Scan & Pay with my RuPay cards and I've found something.

Currently Holding Four Rupay Cards
1) Tata Neu
2) Axis Indian Oil
3) Coral Rupay
4) SBI SimplySave

With Tata Neu and Coral, I'm not seeing any surcharge + GST added at all! It means I don't have to rely on those "surcharge waiver" benefits that other cards offer (which get reflected in the statement later anyway).

On the other hand, with SBI SimplySave and Axis Indian Oil, I'm getting hit as usually we get with the standard fuel surcharge + GST (though they reverse it for those ₹400-4,000 transactions).

So, Please add your valuable experience you got while using other RuPay credit cards that you are holding. And please do mention which Rupay cards do/don't levy surcharges on UPI spends at Fuel Stations.

It will be really helpful if somebody provides insights on below cards too.
Au Bank LIT rupay
Yes bank Kiwi
IndusInd Platinum Rupay
RBL Shoprite rupay

Yes. I have been using Tata Neu Infinity using Neu app for UPI scans at petrol pumps. Never been charged any surcharge + GST. It's always only the fuel price. Same is the case with Federal Wave Virtual Rupay. No surcharge, no GST.

But with ICICI Coral Rupay, they charge surcharge + GST but refund the same in statement.
(However, always the refund is 1 paise more than what I paid, so it is 0.01 discount 😁😆)

[EDIT] - There is a mistake, even for ICICI Coral Rupay via UPI scan, I was not charged surcharge + GST. I just cheked my statement.
The refund was for physical card swipes at petrol bunks.

How much did you both spend for fuel? <400?

Here is what i found out on my web research

SBI BPCL
BPCL FSW.webp

KOTAK INDIANOIL
KOTAK INDIANOIL FSW.webp

HDFC INDIANOIL
HDFC IOCL FSW.webp
AXIS INDIANOIL

AXIS INDIANOIL FSW.webp

AFAIK only SBI BPCL & KOTAK INDIANOIL doesn't charge 10+GST fuel surcharge on fuel below 400

surcharge is added in final fuel price for all credit cards and then reversed. People are sharing wrong info here.

If surcharge is not added then petrol pump has tagged wrong MCC code...There is a shell petrol pump near my place, whose MCC is Grocery therefore, surcharge is not applicable if i use any credit card

The right thing is UPI in CC shouldn't charged with fuel surcharge. Should be treated as regular bank a/c UPI.
Ofcourse no RP on usage of UPI CC.
If you need RP you will be charged with fuel surcharge. For that use CC on POS machines

Maybe that is the case, but for the last 10-12 months, I have been paying for petrol through UPI scans only from different pumps using these cards:

ICICI Coral Rupay
Federal Wave Rupay
Tata Neu Infinity Rupay

For all these 3 cards, it is exact 1000 I pay and 1000 in the statement. Not even 1 paisa less or more anywhere.
(Maybe I am lucky or like you told many pumps use some other MCC).

Earlier I had told for ICICI they charged surcharge + GST, but I checked older statements now, even for that, nothing was charged extra. It was exact 1000.

Only during physical card swipes, they charged surcharge + GST. On UPI scans, it is not there.

Moreover, here is what I have experienced at different fuel stations through scan and pay transactions, look at the below screenshots. Have done some transactions even below 400 Rupees, i.e 110 and 220 rupees. ICICI coral and HDFC Tata Neu both haven't charged even a single rupee for that.
ICICI Coral :-

Tata Neu :-
IMG_20241227_124616.webp It's different scenario for SBI simplysave and axis indian oil.

Lol! Did you test your theory out at any other petrol pump?

Exactly. They are tagging the correct MCC. It is HDFC (and the others you've mentioned) who is being considerate and not adding fuel surcharge on payments via Rupay CC on UPI.

Are you talking about card swipe or UPI scan via rupay cc??

Card swipe attracts surcharge. However UPI scan via Rupay cc may or may not

I have used Tata Neu infinity via rupay scan multiple times without any surcharge. And yes MCC is correct of fuel
