Wrong IMPS transaction

shutzz

TF Buzz
This is a story of wrong transaction made by me on 17Feb2025 on kotak app(IMPS). I accidentally sent inr 800 to someone else account and immediately lodge a complaint on kotak app then after few days i received a mail that kotak tried reaching beneficiary bank of baroda but as the transaction was wrongly done by myseld so it's not possible to reverse the transaction. 800 rupees is not a big amount but i still wanted to try recovering that money.
So, on 28March2025 i lodged a complaint on RBI portal after few days i received mail that money can't be refunded then i was hopeless and forgot that transaction. I was like it is true that accidents can't be undone specially in banking field.
But to my surprise i received the mail from RBI on 27May2025 that 800rs has been reversed to my kotak bank account on 12May2025 and then i checked my account and guess what? Funds was actually reversed.
Though it took around 2 months but it was worth to register a complaint.

Thanks for sharing and good that you got your money back. I am a bit sceptical if you would have received your money back if you had transferred 80k or 8L by mistake, small amount helped is my speculation

To prevent such an incident one should always send 10k first and after getting confirmation from the receiver , one can send rest amount.

Now a days all banks in netbanking give the option to look (Search option after entering the account number and IFSC Code) for account holder's name before transferring the amount. It is almost now foolproof for us before transferring any amount to the added beneficiary.
But then also 2 step verification

Exactly, now with the name look up feature it's certain that amount is transferred to the right person.

Yes, but i sent money by using kotak mobile banking app and in that app there is no option of look up feature that's why this silly mistake happened.
please login using chrome, there is a automatic feature of fetching the name of Beneficiary.

I would like to ask a question here (instead of creating a new thread)

If an IMPS transfer is done to the correct account number but wrong IFSC across a different bank, will the transfer go throug?

Say for example HDFC to SBI

This is really amazing. I made a wrong transaction a few years back via BHIM app from my SBI account to someone's ICICI Bank account. That complaint is still pending with SBI (even though I have closed my SBI Account after their great support) and they still call me every now and then to ask if the money has been refunded. 🙂 P.S. I managed to get contact details of that ICICI Bank account holder and explained them the situation and they cooperated with the same and reversed the transaction after 20 days after verifying everything obviously. It took a lot of efforts of mine and co-incidentally I hold an ICICI Bank account myself, so my ICICI Branch helped me a lot by contacting that person's home branch for assistance even though it was not their problem literally.
