Will you be satisfied at half century or would you consider completing a century? I definitely would if it were possible.
I am really curious how it is possible for him to get 1638 cards? We don’t have that many banks that offer cards and many don’t allow more than a few per bank. So realistically, even 100 cards are very difficult to get. Anyone has any ideas how it could have been done?

He can get cards from all banks in India. Then Many cards give up to 3 or 4 add-on cards. So take for all family members.
Do the reverse also, Take cards for parents and wife and take add-on cards in his name for all those cards. Then also get all possible variants, and ask for duplicate cards. Put 5000 Rs FD in all banks and get secured cards also.
Like that many ways to get cards. But if he is not an influencer, or if he is not getting any benefit from it, then no use of spending so much time. See our admin Technofino, he got some 9 or 12 lakh points and bought a new car with the referral reward points alone. If you are going behind card, then at least some benefit should be there otherwise it is a waste of time and effort.

Is HSBC limited to salaried folks?
Yes

I booked 15 reward nights in 5 star hotels across the world, 5 free business flights and even more economy flights this year all with my reward points.

That's great. We need to get the privileges. Banks try their best not to give it. Happy that you are enjoying the benefits.

Add on cards for family members won't count as your own cards. Even if you took 4 cards from each issuing bank in India, there are only about 20 to 30 such banks. So you won't be able to go above 100 to 200 at the most. Getting add on cards from family members doesn't help. It there are total 100 cards available then the number remains the same whether you get it directly or via a family member. So I don't see how 1638 valid credit cards are possible. Why don't we see anyone here or on amy other forum with even 200 cards?

It's really surprising. 1638 is really crazy number. Not sure if all are active. Whatsoever, it just serves the purpose of guinness record. For daily use he might be just. using 3 or 4.
