Amex Annual Fees Waived Thread

Hi

I asked Amex for Annual fee waiver of gold charge card.

Amex gave me below options

1. 12000 reward points if I decide to pay Annual fees
2. 50% discount on Annual fees
3. 100% reversal of Annual fees if I spend 60k in 3 months.

I am thinking to opt for 12000 reward points as I shifted all my spends to Axis Magnus and Vistara infinite. Don't want to do any manufactured spends.

I don't remember but someone said that, on request Amex gave 20k reward points instead of 12k to someone. is there any trick to convince for 20k points?

TIA

This is my first renewal of the Plat Travel card. Got two options:
  1. Give away 10k points for fee waiver
  2. Get 10k points credit for paying the fee
Which one should I opt for? The first option looks good to me considering the fact that I will get 0.59 paisa per MR.

Please suggest

(for others reference purpose)

For spends of 4L in a year, we get Taj gift voucher worth ₹ 35,000 (48000 MR + 10,000 Taj Voucher + 2000 MR Referral Bonus) = 8.75%.

Taj Voucher: 1 MR = ₹ 0.50p.

Fee: ₹ 5900 (incl. GST)

1. Option value = Effective Reward Rate = 7.5%
2. Option value = Effective Reward Rate = 9.85%

Flipkart: 1 MR = ₹ 0.30p

1. Option value = Effective Reward Rate = 5.5%
2. Option value = Effective Reward Rate = 6.89%

Understand the point, not the math of 300 rupees
but that 5600 or 5900 will be totally spent (expense) towards fee........ this is not the case when you spend 1.9 lakhs for travel and get 10K points. The points in the latter case are earned free of cost on purchasing travel tickets.

Travel and 1.9 spends are indicative examples

Why not consider this as an expense towards the card in return you get MR at a much better value? Here you are getting approx 85MR/100 (dont find flaw in the math, I failed multiple times in school and college)

dont look where the money is goign look what you are getting for the amount of money spent

Raj is not wrong either - you can look at points gained or money lost. His point being has to spend 5900 for no reason but other way to look at it is you gain 10k for spending 5900. It just depends what matters to you
True..... I'm not that Luxury traveller... Hence, normally, I dont think I'll be maximizing my return on MR points by transferring to Mariott/Taj vouchers. (As I am okay staying in mid tier hotels). So, for my case - giving away MR points makes a bit more sense than spending additional cash to preserve the point.

But for instance, for someone who prefers staying in Mariott, preserving the MR points makes more sense. It all depends on case to case on how/where we intend to use the points

Of course! Whatever works best for you. Everyone requirement here is different.

same case for Ultimate. pay 5900 and get 5000 points (which you'll get if you spend 1,50,000 on best possible cases) so saving 144100.

Here also, if you opt for Flipkart vouchers with 2nd option usually you'll get 1.3% extra.

Ultimately whatever works for you is good, just providing some observations.

For 10k points you might need to spend 1.2L apprx.

1) Amex is quite liberal in waiving the fee.
2) I started off with Plat travel in 2015 and got the fee waived every year till I went for Plat charge which made my plat travel free till I hold the plat charge.
3) Offering fee waivers for points is also true as some of my colleagues didn’t get outright fee waivers but were offered conditional waivers in lieu of points.
4) My MRCC has always been LTF for me as it was a companion with Plat travel.
5) For Plat Charge : here’s where it comes down to your negotiating skills. One thing that’s certain with platinum is that you ll have to pay the fee without exceptions. Now, what you get in return depends on various factors such as past spends, vintage with amex and you negotiation skills.
Here’s my retention offers year wise:
A) 2021 - 65k Taj voucher (no negotiation)
B) 2022 - 55k Taj Voucher (no negotiation)
C) 2023 - 1 L MR points (negotiated benefit)
At first, I was offered 50k points or 35k taj which I refused. Then I was offered 45k taj or 50k points. Finally, I was offered 55k taj or 1L points. I went for points.

spends range in each year (apprx.) ?

For my Plat Travel’s 1st year renewal, I got 2 options:
1. 50% annual fee waiver: Paying Rs. 2950 as the annual fee
2. Annual fee in exchange of 10,000 MR points

Which option is better? Or should I ask for more options?

again depends is saving 3k rs more important for you
or earning 10k points against it more important
weigh them both and decide accordingly

What is the fee waiver for Gold charge card?

If you're using Gold Charge for 6x1000 per month or 72k per year in total. Then option 3 should be ruled out anyway. Option 1 is decent.

If I get these 3 options for Plat Travel, I would have definitely taken Option 3.
