You need to make sure that you get sufficient time for cancelling your credit card before next year annual fee is charged.
So if you got FYF card, try to start process of cancelling your card around when 11 months completed. Then there should not be any charges.

Which card? Axis cancelled Freecharge card in one day. Raise a request to cancel atleast 15 days before of one year completion

Just ask either make it LTF or cancel.

I did it once with rbl supercard, they gave annual waiver for another year
