as of now only plat charge and plat reserve are eligible to be the primary card and any lower priced card would be a companion card
i talked to customer care and they told me a system generated response would be sent to coonvert your cheaper card to a companion card

Yesterday, cust care refused to even convert my plat travel as companion with my Plat charge & asked me to apply for reserve separately or wait for Pre approved offer .. So amex is playing tough dishing out companion cards for now !

I got a new Platinum Travel Card today. I actually applied for upgrade to my MRCC, then got a call from Amex employee, who suggested if I were interested in keeping MRCC, then I should go for a new card instead. Since I was curious, I asked if I can hold MRCC as a companion card, to which, the Amex employee assured me that my existing MRCC will be internally converted to Companion card and it will stay that way as long as my Platinum travel card is active.

Cannot confirm just yet, as my upgrade request also got fulfilled and as of today, I have 2 Platinum travel cards, requested them to revert the upgraded card back to MRCC, post which the companion card process will happen. Will update If it actually happens.

True. I asked them to convert plat reserve to MRCC they refused; but they waived 10k fee on my plat reserve since I have a plat charge.

They are getting saying No to convert PT as companion even to platinum charge so doubt they doing that for reserve … But no harm trying bro

So got confirmation today, my MRCC which got upgraded to Plat Travel , has been converted back to MRCC, and now marked as companion card to my Plat Travel card.

I have an upgrade offer too on my MRCC, should I try asking them if they will make it a companion card to my new platinum travel (once upgraded)?

Ya makes sense. Please try that route and update. I spoke to customer care for companion MRCC with either Plat Res or Gold and was told that they've stopped giving companion card for quite sometime.
