Subject: Possible Fraudulent Call Claiming to Be HDFC Back Office – Need Advice
Hello Everyone,
I recently received a call from +917525891029, claiming to be from the HDFC Bank back office. Here's the detailed sequence of events:
1. At 7 PM, I got a call from this number. The caller introduced himself as an HDFC Bank back-office representative and asked to verify my date of birth.
2. He claimed that I was eligible for an HDFC credit card and needed to share an OTP sent by HDFC Bank to process the application.
3. I received the OTP, and after verifying the caller’s intent, I shared it with him. He assured me that I would receive the card within three days and an email confirmation within 24 hours.
Later, I became suspicious and called back on the same number for clarification. During this second call:
The person explained that it was his personal number and that he was speaking to me from his personal capacity as today was a Sunday.
He mentioned that I could call him back on Monday, when he would be at the office, to check the status of the credit card.
Important Context:
I don’t have any existing savings account or credit card with HDFC Bank.
I had not applied for any credit card recently.
My Concerns:
1. The use of a personal number for official communication seems unprofessional and raises doubts.
2. Sharing an OTP over the phone is against all bank guidelines.
3. There’s a possibility this could be an attempt to commit fraud.
Steps Taken So Far:
I’ve raised this issue with HDFC Bank for investigation and am waiting for their official response.
I’ve not observed any unauthorized transactions or changes yet but remain vigilant.
Request for Advice:
Has anyone else encountered such calls from personal numbers claiming to be HDFC Bank representatives?
Should I escalate this immediately to the cybercrime portal, or wait for HDFC Bank’s response?
Are there any additional precautions I should take to safeguard my financial details and credit history?
Looking forward to your insights and suggestions.
Thank you!
