Subject: Possible Fraudulent Call Claiming to Be HDFC Back Office – Need Advice

Hello Everyone,

I recently received a call from +917525891029, claiming to be from the HDFC Bank back office. Here's the detailed sequence of events:

1. At 7 PM, I got a call from this number. The caller introduced himself as an HDFC Bank back-office representative and asked to verify my date of birth.

2. He claimed that I was eligible for an HDFC credit card and needed to share an OTP sent by HDFC Bank to process the application.

3. I received the OTP, and after verifying the caller’s intent, I shared it with him. He assured me that I would receive the card within three days and an email confirmation within 24 hours.

Later, I became suspicious and called back on the same number for clarification. During this second call:

The person explained that it was his personal number and that he was speaking to me from his personal capacity as today was a Sunday.

He mentioned that I could call him back on Monday, when he would be at the office, to check the status of the credit card.

Important Context:

I don’t have any existing savings account or credit card with HDFC Bank.

I had not applied for any credit card recently.

My Concerns:

1. The use of a personal number for official communication seems unprofessional and raises doubts.

2. Sharing an OTP over the phone is against all bank guidelines.

3. There’s a possibility this could be an attempt to commit fraud.

Steps Taken So Far:

I’ve raised this issue with HDFC Bank for investigation and am waiting for their official response.

I’ve not observed any unauthorized transactions or changes yet but remain vigilant.

Request for Advice:

Has anyone else encountered such calls from personal numbers claiming to be HDFC Bank representatives?

Should I escalate this immediately to the cybercrime portal, or wait for HDFC Bank’s response?

Are there any additional precautions I should take to safeguard my financial details and credit history?

Looking forward to your insights and suggestions.

Thank you!

Change passwords and verify balances regularly.

try to avoid doing same again..

Nothing to worry but be on alert.

What is the issue you are facing, there is a place where it shows the agent detail.. in that page there is requirement of providing office address at the top of page, you need to scroll to top and then fill that.. then you will get next button enabled.. and then use debit card to authenticate
Can you please share the working agent link with me too? Also is there any cooldown applicable via agent too or it just overrides?

Yes.. already raised the issue with HDFC bank. Since looking at message it might be legitimate. Have you have ever seen this type of incident?
No, but some things I would have done is
1. Record the call. (I have call recording enabled for all unknown numbers, there is an option in phone to not announce as "this call is now being recorded". But it will just play a beep tone)
2. Ask the person where is he calling from, which branch, or which place. and his name and designation.
3. Ask if I will get any official mail or SMS or how else is it processed?

Yes Since I am also eager to get an HDFC core credit card, so if someone would have called me and asked these things, I also would have fell for that.

Even today i called him and he said if this number is spam, i would not have received the call and money has been already deducted immediately after sharing the OTP. However still waiting fo official reply from HDFC bank.

Nothing will happen, so calm yourself and move on. The next time you receive a call from a credit card agent, just say NO.
Why were you in such a hurry to email HDFC? When have you lost nothing?

I even gave the front pict of my credit card for the Inidusind credit card when the agent asked.

yes, as long as you have not lost money, be cool. sometimes due to all the spam and fraud call news that we hear, we mistake everything for fraud.
maybe in this case it is legitimate. so don't worry, it is clear from the sms that it is for cc application, it will reflect in the system only after 2-3 days.
Need to wait a few more days to see it in the system. so be cool.

Thanks dear. I agreed what you say. I have also blocked all my other banks credit cards and debit card immediately after this incident. Thinking of activating again after 3 days.
