HDFC Bank charged me 1% extra for education payment in an HDFC Bank Gateway for a payment made using Tata Neu credit card

I made a payment of ₹1,420 on NIOS (an education board like CBSE) 2 days ago using my Tata Neu Infinity CC on an HDFC Bank payment gateway operated by PayU.

Today, I noticed in my current statement that the amount HDFC added was ₹1,434.20 instead of ₹1,420, which is exactly 1% extra.

However, in the Payment Gateway, while I was making the payment, the amount being shown to me was ₹1,420 and nothing was mentioned about extra charges or anything like that. I even have a screenshot of the payment page.

Can anybody tell why I was charged extra? And is it worth it to take up a fight with HDFC Bank?

I need to pay around 1 L for my children education fee;

It will be paid thru school app and thru
Payment gateway - CC avenue
Merchant Name - The ******* International School

My question is that,
1) Will I get any additional charges if I pay thru Tata neu infinity?
2) Will I get 1.5% neu coins? (Customer care confirmed that education fee payment will give neu coins)

Can any expert pls help 🙏

1) If the school wants to charge "convenience fees" (Hate this term now), they would levy them from your card. It could be visible even after the amount settlement (Meaning once it is visible in the current statement), like how I described in this post.

2) Yep, you'll get the reward points as usual.

I recently pay school fee for my son using Tata Neu Infinity card.

charges : 1.1 % + GST (18%)

you will get 1.5% neu coins.

end of the day its benefit for us. (0.2% to 0.3%)

What??

Can you confirm the payment gateway? Is it thru school website or any other 3rd party app?

Bcoz in my cc avenue gateway, it's not showing any additional charges;

these charges might be shown in your school page itself, if the are not mentioned in that page then later they will add the charges in your credit card statement after some time (check it after 1 week or 10 days)

If you order grocery from big basket using that NeuCoin.

We always have 10-20% discounts on BB.

So technically 1.5 Neu coins is equal to = 1.2₹ which you paid as fees.

So your benefits is zero (0).

I think CC payment attracts extra convience charges on NIOS like many other government websites. Its just that HDFC does not show it upfront.
Repeat same payment procedure with any other CC and you will see 1434 as amount to be paid, if not, then settled amount would be 1434.
So, the issue is not HDFC specific
I guess IDFC First Wealth credit card won't charge

What if UPI method is used to pay edu fees and Tata Infinity CC is used? It should get 1.5% neu coins. Can somebody confirm? But we need remember that there is a per monthly capping of 500 coins for UPI payment.

This is a problem of HDFC's payment gateway. Other PGs show the additional convenience charges and also show how much will be the final amount. Sadly, for them, it is a hidden charge 🙁
I tried the same kind of payment today. Razorpay was the PG. Will update the post after statement generation. Do you people know how I can check this before statement date?

Once the transaction is posted under unbilled, you should see the final amount charged and the reward points reflected after a day or two. Did you do it through UPI CC or direct CC?

Got 6x rps
Update: did a second transaction on the same, got 10x rps for incremental spend.
Is there a possibility that pg charges are levied after a transaction is seen as unbilled?

I want to try this, I have 90k to pay. The payment gateway is axis and it is showing 1% pg charges +18% on pg charges for cc payment. But when I entered Tata neu upi id I was able to enter the upi pin ( assuming I will be able to pay, haven’t paid yet). Does this also attract education fee payment charges 1% or something?

If partial payment is allowed, try with a small amount first. Check statement in app and if ok, make remaining payment. I never tried this mode.
