HDFC bank deducted the refund amount instead of refunding it! 😲

After browsing Technofino for a few months and even following its founder on X, I finally created my account here just now to share what I have just experienced.

I paid for my Swiggy food order using my HDFC Swiggy credit card today at 8:15 PM. A few items from the order were missing, so, at 9:36 PM, Swiggy's bot chat support refunded me nearly half the amount I had paid.

However, HDFC bank, instead of refunding me, automatically deducted/charged that refund amount to my credit card at 9:53 PM. It happened without any OTP. How is that possible? This amount (which should have been refunded) shows as a new expense in my HDFC credit card statement in the app and MyCards!

How is that even possible?

I have attached several screenshots here. You can see that Swiggy sent me a refund of 114 (original order amount was 239), but HDFC bank instead of refunding it (which I understand and expereinced that it takes a few days) deducted that refund amount. When I got the text SMS and email saying 114 rupees has been deducted, I thought it may be a faulty text and email. But even the HDFC app and MyCards shows the deduction of 114 rupees as you can see in the screenshot.

You can also see that I have no Swiggy food or Instamart order of 114 rupees today.

Wait 1 more day, some transactions take 1 day to be visible in unbilled transactions. if u don't get clarity, raise complaint from hdfc side.

The problem is this is not a transaction in the first place. Swiggy refunded me 114 rupees. But HDFC somehow deducted 114 rupees instead of crediting it. It’s strange.

I understand that the Swiggy refund may come in 3-4 days. But that will be the actual refund. What about this 114 deduction that HDFC has done without any OTP or authorization.

I emailed them right away. Waiting to hear back

It hasn't been actually deducted. For some reason it's reflected as a debit transaction in unbilled. I have also experienced the same
Wait for the transactions (both ₹239 & ₹114) to get settled. After that it will be updated correctly to ₹239 as debit & ₹114 as credit

Thank you so much Kaif. It's helpful.

And I'm not the only one who has faced this. I was browing X (Twitter) and many people have had the same issue recently. One goes back to June 2024.

Is it allowed to post external links on Technofino forum? I just created my account yesterday, so I'm unsure. But here are some Twitter links of users facing the same problem. Swiggy and HDFC, instead of crediting the refund, deducted the amount. They all have received no help yet. But thanks Kaif for sharing your experience. It gives me hope the the problem will be addressed.

That said, here are the tweet links of some other people who faced the same problem where the refund amount was deducted from their credit card instead of being credited:
😳😱🙄
