I had redeemed at Marriott Whitefield.
2-3 days before my stay someone from their team had reached out to me via Whatsapp, and included breakfast to my stay (alongside room upgrade and lounge access).
Would recommend reaching out via chat (in the app), or requesting them during checking in. They usually comply (my experience only).

Do you have gold / platinum status
Just request them over chat from the mobile app or by calling the hotel directly. If they agree, good and enjoy the breakfast. If they don't, let it go

I currently do, but when I had redeemed I was silver.

Similar experience at the Sheraton in Bangalore too. Silver status.

You can ask them to include in checking, they usually give discounted rate.

Hotel to hotel. There is no requirement to provide breakfast to Silver / Gold
If you are platinum or above. Breakfast and lounge (if the hotel.has it) is complimentary. Upgrade to a Suite likely, bigger / better room almost definite.
Below platinum, it all depends on hotel.
So if you are platinum you are all set, if not, please be as nice as possible while asking and most likely you shall get it.

It only comes up 2-3 days before the check in date iirc
You can use this. Or you can simply call the hotel. And ask if they can accomodate you with a free breakfast. Calling worked for me for a stay at Sheraton
What if I'm just a member (basic/lowest tier) they do offer these if asked?

Umm, I guess it just depends on the property, and the person who is at the reception.
You can just ask them about breakfast and upgrades while checking in. I haven't seen gatekeeping of breakfasts at least (in any 5 star property, even beyond Marriott), but then again, I probably haven't experienced enough.
Chances of any Marriott upgrading and providing free breakfast is good fairly low. Breakfast maybe, room almost impossible especially given the number of A/T/P/G/S members ahead of you
btw if u book via other channel like say smartbuy or third party website like mmt cleartrip etc and not directly from them still this works? and does it work with all other chains or just marriot
Elite benefits as per t&c
As per the t&c, platinum and above are eligible to free breakfast & Lounge access at most Marriott brands (most because some brands like Ritz etc are excluded) if they book directly.
Gold status in Marriott is not eligible for free breakfast but most will agree to when requested.
Practically
Practically most Marriotts in India provide elite benefits to people even if they book through OTAs, but it's not required by terms
Most of my stays are at Marriott brand hotels so can't comment about other hotel chains.
