can you try going to the branch and applying, or send an email directly to the grievance redressal team for upgrade? in my experience with RMs, they say that they will need some time when they want to avoid saying directly that they can't do it.
i see no reason why you shouldn't be eligible for an upgrade (if you satisfy eligibility for the card).

Hope u requested infinia instead of dcb
By looking at ur grand old relationship and limit more than 10l they themselves should have honored you but they are not matured enough

HDFC send a very cryptic reply but yeah basically it's FYF.
Your experience quite mirrors mine. I have a sal acct since 2008 but never took a HDFC CC (have many others since 2003 but not HDFC)

Had applied for DCB online since my MBA institute mailed me a couple of months back that LTF DC is available if applied online. I followed that last month around Oct mid and completed entire process online going through some link I found on the website.

Post that, one HDFC lady called and asked me to give the passing certificate which I did to her representative physically at office. Then complete silence. When I checked with in Oct end, didn't get any reply.

Now I got an email from the Thiruvanmayur HDFC Cards Division saying my Aadhar address didn't match the postal address and hence they are rejecting it (i changed jobs last year and aadhar is not updated with the rental address of my new place). I postal mailed them the details with my rent agreement. Still it was in dilly-dallying between Declined and In-Process (the HDFC CC check link is the most unreliable ever).

Subsequently last week I got a call that someone is coming to take your eKYC and Aadhar based verification physically. I did that - DCB got approved and delivered last Saturday.

I called the CC today to check if it is LTF. She said it is not. I said why the hell that lady took my alumnus pass certificate for? I called her up and she said she was trying "Physical" under some other Reference number (which incidentally I never had with me) and now my application has got approved under an "Online" reference number. So it is not LTF and neither can she do it from her end (complete imbecility). (It looks to me that the card I received is FYF - don't know that also for sure)

Bottomline - HDFC various departments do not know what the others are doing. I have a card now and don't know how to make it LTF (have mailed the CC now today) despite of having a long term association with them and being eligible for LTF under the college program alumnus offer.

@venkateshr From my experience, the best option is to courier/post physical letter and the request form (upgrade/LTF etc) to the HDFC Cards division Chennai address.

Have a cover letter with your card details, what you are requesting for etc.
Enclose the relevant form with details you are requesting for.

The customer care email/phone team will take you on a roundabout and then dump you.

Thanks Ashwin. Yes. As a matter of fact I did this because I had a feeling that something is amiss in this entire thing somewhere around mid of last month. When I post mailed the HDFC Cards division, I did so with all my details including salary slips, alumnus passing certificate and also a proper cover letter explaining the shift to another city and requested to them to kindly consider the rental agreement in lieu of that instead of an aadhar or other address proofs which I didn't have in this city. Subsequently once they did the physical KYC last week, I though that issue is no long a botheration to an approval.

But the processing of the card as online and not considering the alumnus offer despite providing it twice over (once to that lady and next time to the HDFC Cards division itself) is a real humdinger. What has got me is the real non-coordination between any arm therein. For a single mobile number to take one application reference and process it to end isn't rocket science. Seems like system created multiple references - one online, one physical and don't know if there are more. And to reject on the basis of application source is quite a new thing honestly.

Anyways have mailed the Grievance cell today asking if they can consider this under LTF since I meet the criteria. Hopeful that there may be a positive revert. Thanks.

Alumni cards have institute name printed on it. Does your card have it?

I was told that is the norm with physical applications and for institutions where the partnership (with HDFC DCB) is highlighted. For other institutions, on their list, and specifically upgrades through grievance/priority redressal, the card looks exactly like the standard card - without any institution name on it.

So I received the card & called customer care executive to confirm that it's actually first year free & guess what they said no (you have to spend 3lakh within 90 days).

Below is the screenshot of e-mail I received from grievance redressal team confirming it's FYF (before I applied for the card). I think need to go to RBI & get HDFC banned again for malpractices.

Don't do anything...
If they apply FYF complain using this email and fee will be reversed...customer care are bunch of useless folks...policies keep changing for FYF and they are least bothered to check in system what might have applied to customer.

correct.
write to grievance redressal mentioning the last 4 digits of your card, and ask them about the unconditional FYF status. the people over phone don't know anything about such offers and have only basic knowledge of products.
