This morning I received an email from Amex for a "Limited Period offer | Upgrade to Metal and 1,15,000 bonus points".

Are you all receiving this email?

My background:
I have a Personal Gold Charge Card and Corporate Green Card from Amex.

Life update:
In January of 2024, I took the offer and upgraded my Gold Charge card to Platinum Charge card with 135k offer.

Lol saw the offer for 1.35L points and platinum upgrade. closed the app, offer is gone within 5 minutes, not able to find it again on app or website, Support cant help. what a joke.
Received an email for the same. Check, you must have got an email on your registered mail id. I can also see it on the app.

Surprisingly, someone from AMEX team called me with an upgrade offer - considering my previous AMEX cards which I held for over a decade or so - in two instances each. They were very polite and trying to convince me that I am in need of it.

Being a stubborn banker I am, I refused to yield to their sales talk and said I am extremely happy with my MRCC. Glad to get that call and to know that they took the trouble of reaching me. But, my usage pattern does not warrant such an upgrade.

I too got an offer for the same. Really tempted, but since they don't have any spend milestones based program, it is not really worth it. Will never be able to convince myself to spend 60-70k on a CC if I can't recover the same via some spending based milestone benefits.

its worth it only if you have 1 luxury vacation planned next year, then you break even and some purely from 1.35L points. Rest all are add-ons. If not, this isn't it.

Even for a luxury vacation, we're basically paying Rs. 70000 (including GST) upfront for around Rs. 70000 to Rs. 1 lakh worth of Marriott Bonvoy points. That also restricting us to Marriott Bonvoy for getting value, else the conversion is even worse for other partners. I know they are trying hard to show that it's a luxury card by having a lot of luxury tie ups, but Indians like seeing value in everything. If they had given renewal waiver on a high spend, then also would have considered. They don't proactively give any renewals benefits, and it seems we should call them up and request them for benefits on renewal. Not for me.

I think this is best reason for me to decline this upgrade too.

Why spend 70K and limit ourselves to Marriot only when other hotels could be also explored incase we are planning for a trip.

Thats a fair point, in my case i have my eye on certain mariott properties anyway, so instead of paying cash, paying points. so it adds up.

Even for Marriott properties, I feel Magnus for Burgundy gives 5:4 conversion to ITC, and ITC gives 2:3 conversion to Marriott Bonvoy. Also, M4B itself gives 5:4 conversion to MB. So I personally focus towards that for miles.

You can only transfer a maximum of 15,000 ITC Green Points per quarter in a calendar year to Marriott. So that's peanuts if you're planning a luxury vacation!

Its still a revenue stay right? Like for you to make 135k points through 5:4 , you have to spend quite a lot else you wil fall short heavy of a luxury vacation.

If I take Amex Plat CC, I'd anyway pay the revenue of Rs. 70k and also compulsory spend in the first 30/60 days to get those 135k MRs. Whichever way you look at it, it's not really a great deal.

So are you getting one?

I have received the email and I am very inclined to take this offer.

Nope, don't find any value in the same. Instead, I can get FYF Amex Plat Travel card. Then can spend 4 lakhs of relevant purchases on it. Get 8k base MR points (minimum) + 40k milestone MR points + Rs. 10k Taj voucher. No spend of Rs. 70k on this card unlike Plat CC. This will give me more value and of course I can repeat this every year.

Guys.. For those considering this upgrade - only go for it of you have confirmed plan for luxury vacation this year. Else you will be forced to renew next year just for maintaining points. Also amex has stopped giving more than 10or 20k voucher for renwal. So think 10 times before renewal. Btw.. I have amwx plat since last 3 yrs and will cancel next year.

I have received this update on my Platinum Travel. I also hold Gold charge and MRCC. Upon upgrade I will be given Platinum Charge and I will then have 4 Amex cards. Will the reward account for gold and platinum charge be a common pool?

Well I can confirm that MRCC and Amex Plat will share common pool. In fact you should use MRCC more than plat for spends as you can benefit from 100 points spend based thingy. Probably Gold charge points will also land in same pool. However you need to confirm with Amex. Quite possibly they may upgrade your gold charge and leave Plat travel as is (which will be not good)

Thanks. The upgrade is received on my Platinum Travel. So I will have both gold and platinum charge.
