IS SBI cashback card a scam?

It seems like SBI Card is scamming people under the name of cashback card, which is supposed to provide 5% cash back in all online transactions (except Insurance, utility bill payments and other standard exemptions.) I am using this card for all my online transactions from last 2years. Recently I am noticing that instead of getting 5% cashback in my credit card statement, I am getting overall 2.9-3% cashback although all of my transactions are online transaction.

I tried to contact with SBI Card customer care team to discuss about this matter and explain if there's any recent changes in their t&c. But it seems like no-one either do not know the exact answer or not ready to response to their customers.

I am attaching a screenshot of my recent credit card statement, along with the cash back that I have received.

Does anyone know about any recent changes about SBI cashback card's cashback policy?

If you see here, I have made 1 insurance premium worth 1411 to policy bazar, rest of all the transactions are normal online transaction. But despite of all I have received only 297 rupees as cashback in this billing cycle.

r u sure about that ?
they are all online payments, right...

It's not about whether the transaction is online or offline—it's about the Merchant Category Code (MCC). If the MCC is eligible, you'll get 5% cashback; if not, it will be 0% or 1%. That's the key factor.

Btw, this applies to all banks and all cards, not just the Cashback card.

To check the MCC, make a small test purchase and then contact customer support to ask for the MCC of the transaction. Once you have the code, search it online to determine if it qualifies for the 5% cashback. Only then should you proceed with larger transactions.

You got the correct Cashback. What was your expectation?

Do check the latest tncs and time to time changes received from bank to your email id (if you blocked it, social media well covered for this card). Your cashback is matched and no issues.

I hope you aware about monthly limitations because in that same notification they also mentioned exclusions. Not every purchase eligible for 5%, it depends on MCC not based on category we hope to think.

This is not the same card that was launched 2 years back, but 2 years means you might already aware about it.

Its not about online or offline, its about MCC. If eligible, you'll get 5% otherwise 0% or 1%. That's it.

To check mcc: Purchase test transaction, call support and enquiry code, google it and found whether eligible for 5% or not then only you can proceed it.

Btw, same applicable for all banks and all cards (not only for Cashback card).
Thanks for sharing insights, did not know about it.

I did not know that gyftr transactions are under exclusion list. Thanks for clearing all the confusion.

Here is some hope for you, though gyftr direct purchase may not eligible for 5% but there are alternative routes where you can purchase same voucher and still get 5% (Spoiler: its possible because of MCC), for more do search the forum, there are many threads which update time to time about latest options to purchase vouchers and still get 5%.

Good luck!

Is there any place available where we can purchase an Amazon Pay gift card right now? I checked Park Plus, Magic Pin, Tata, and Amazon, but none of them currently offer the gift card for purchase to avail 5% cashback .
