Don't compare India with London/UK.

India was not always an independent country.

India envisioned the NCMC (National Common Mobility Card) in 2006, but Visa and Mastercard refused to support it at that time.

Later, the RuPay card NCMC project started in 2016.

At that time, it was also realized that the AFC (Automatic Fare Collection) gates were from Western countries.

If Western countries imposed sanctions on India, our metro system would come to a halt.

India developed its own AFC system while RuPay was working on the NCMC in the background.

Now that all systems are ready, the problem is:

Replacing all existing metro AFC gates is costing crores of rupees.

On the other hand, it’s also taking time for all banks to go live on the NCMC system.

Five years ago, RuPay started the Tap & Pay project with Google Pay, which was completed last month.

Another thing is that India adopted offline wallet metro payments like China, Japan, etc., because most people here travel by metro, bus, and train.

During rush hours, online contactless payments cannot handle the load.

For the NCMC, NPCI has organized several hackathons and ideathons to find solutions to all the problems and challenges.

I believe that all NCMC-related problems in India should be resolved by 2030.

Always remember: "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now."
I don’t think all this is correct. Contactless payments do handle heavy loads. London Underground carries way more people and most use them. It’s most likely due to the fact that credit card penetration is very low in India compared to developed countries and even debit cards or banks accounts are not ubiquitous (used by everyone). A poor labourer or guard might not know how to check and maintain balance in his savings account and to handle debit card payments. Imagine people arguing with metro staff about wrong deductions or claiming they have balance in their accounts. That’s probably why an offline prepaid card system was chosen. Otherwise, what prevents India from allowing all Rupay credit and debit cards to be used in an online manner without the need for any separate wallet or recharge? Yes, it is costly to replace all fare gayes and that’s why I suggested that as a start at least one or two could be made available at most stations along with signage. Our metro systems are world class and we should strive to incorporate latest technology.

London metros, most people use there Oyster cards.

Oyster cards also use offline contactless wallet.

London's Oyster card holds a preloaded balance that is deducted as you travel. The card reader checks and updates the balance when tapped in and out. The fare is calculated based on the journey details, and the correct amount is deducted automatically. Although transactions occur offline, the card's data is occasionally synced with central systems when you top up at a station, use the Transport for London (TfL) website, or use a ticket machine. This helps keep your balance updated across different points of usage.

RuPay NCMC create a travel payment ecosystem like Oyster Card of London, Octopus Card of Hong Kong, EZI Card of Singapore, Nol Card of Dubai, PASMO card and SUICA card of Japan (or another is FeliCa develop by Sony), T-Union of China, Mondex of Canada, Chipknip of Netherlands, Geldkarte of Germany, Quick of Austria, Moneo of France, Proton of Belgium, Carta prepagata of Italy, SUBE card of Argentina, Touch ’n Go and MyRapid Card of Malaysia, Upass card of South Korea etc
