I've never used HDFC BillPay before. On registering my CC and a couple of other billers, it says 'Pending', and asks for 12 hours for activation. What does it say then? For one of the billers it has been 'Pending' for ages! How does one know that it's ready for making payments?

Also, does a CC, or a power bill qualify for 'ad hoc' payments, or do the bills need to be fetched first by HDFC? It says that will happen only from the next billing cycle after registration!

I'm all confused!

Pending status doesn't matter. For 1st 24 hours after adding, you can do overall 10k payment for the biller. After that you can do unlimited payment. Even if it shows pending, the transaction gets successful and settled with the biller.

Even if it says , pending, you can still try for the payment ,if there is any issue it will immediately fail or else it will be successful.
I have paid so many times successfully when the status was showing pending..

Regarding ad-hoc payment, you can do for CCs for sure, I do it every time
Regarding power bills we can definitely pay after the bill was generated at that time it fetches it. before bill generated, not sure how it works, may be depends on the electricity board if it accepts payment before bill generation

Regarding automatic fetching and paying the bill , you have to enable 'smart pay ' for this.
If you enable smart pay for cc or power bills, it fetches bill after bill was generated and pays for it 4 days before the due date with an intimation about 1 day before payment.

There is nothing to confuse here..

Easy-Peasy... Haa...

You can do ad-hoc payment for cc .. some cc like amex, SBI, indusind will reflect in your card instantly.. axis CC payment does take 3 days minimum.. but always try to do the payments 4-5 days before due date.. to be on safer side..

I have registered my CC in HDFC billpay. But it show Smartpay status is OFF. What is the meaning of Smartpay Status OFF ? If Smartpay is OFF will we earn 1% cashback on the credit card bill payment or no? Attaching the screenshot taken from HDFC billpay for reference.
Just to add to what @pprakash11 already said.

just ensure when you pay, you select the Debit Card number to Pay and not from the Bank Account, otherwise you won't get it.

1. How to verify, you will be prompted for the Card Expiry date if you selected the DC to pay
2. Also after TXN done, you can check in your account statement page, a POS TXN done, that means DC is used to pay

If 'Pending' doesn't really mean pending, won't it confuse someone unfamiliar with the strange terminology? 🙂.
True, it is what it is..

We need to work with the system..

There is something stopping the update process of the status.. some go thru as successful , soem stays at pending even though we can successfully do the transactions...if you really want it to be very clear, you could log the issue with HDFC and chase them up until it's fixed...

Choice is very obvious, isn't it??

HDFC banking app is worst of all apps.. really they are far behind in tech stack as compared to ICICI axis kotak idfc...

This was the exact reason why they were banned for something for sometime last time ...wasn't it?
Right and they did came up with mycards but did not integrated that into app... whereas Axis when it came up with new cc portal.. it was immediately available inside app as well..
IDFC i feel is one step ahead as it let you do the RTGS txn as well from app...
