Query regarding no-cost EMI on SimplySAVE Credit Card

Hi,

I recently had purchased an AC on Flipkart, and used my SimplySAVE Credit Card for EMI, it was a no-cost 9 months EMI, got 3k off as well, so basically got the AC for 41,490 INR and since I had chosen no-cost EMI, my card was charged a transaction 39,011 INR.

All good so far, but the thing is, I ordered on 19th May, and bill generation date is 21st, so in my case bill got generated on 21st May. I was worried what'd happen because the transaction takes a while to get converted to an EMI. I got some info regarding the EMI getting converted to merchant EMI post bill generation date, while I see full amount as total bill amount that I am supposed to pay.

And my question is what exactly I am supposed to pay? The minimum due? The EMI I was supposed to pay, which was displayed on Flipkart?

Regards.

Hi,

Just wanted to rant a little bit about SBI Customer Care support.

I basically purchased an AC on 19th May on EMI, 21st May bill was generated and 22nd May the transaction was converted to merchant EMI while the bill was generated with the entire amount.

I contacted SBI customer care support to clear my doubts as to how much I am exactly supposed to pay, they told me I am only supposed to pay Minimum Due Amount, and that would be adjusted in next statement where the EMI would start properly. After this, I paid 2500 rupees, which a little bit more than 1949 rupees which was the Minimum Due Amount, around 9th June I got an upcoming auto-debit message, turns out it was going to deduct 36k from my SBI Savings Account, which I didn't have, if I have the money, I wouldn't have gone with the EMI in the first place. On 9th June I actually emailed them too from the SBI Card app, and which I never got a response from. Woke up today to see the following charges on my card; "PAYMENT DISHONOUR FEE" and some other charges which were reversed, but this "PAYMENT DISHONOUR FEE" got me furious, the whole point of buying something on EMI is to avoid paying upfront payment, and I am exactly supposed to pay the entire amount as upfront? Stupidity at its best.

Anyways, I called up customer care support today again, and they initially told me nothing can be done, but when I asked them to connect me to their higher ups, they told me to hold for a few minutes and also asked if I recently asked for any fee waiver, which I said I haven't. Later, they told me they've raised a request and I should get a callback regarding the same within a month, and this 729.62 INR amount would be reversed as well. I know most probably SBI is also going to charge me 250 + GST for mandate failure due to low funds available.

I feel extremely disappointed in SBI, they're this big and then stuff like this, my only question to the customer care executive was that if I am supposed to pay the entire amount in advance like this, I might as well have avoided the EMI in the first place.

What should I do now? Any help is really appreciated, I feel like escalating this to their higher ups.

Regards.

You must escalate it to nodal officer of sbi card and if not satisfied with response then escalate it to higher one along with RBI Ombudsman.

Here is link with full details of banking complaint email id and number.

For RBI Ombudsman Compalint link is

But i suggest first raise the complaint with channel like customare care>Nodal officer>Principal Nodal officer>Customer servise head>RBI Ombudsman.

In my view everything will get sorted. just need to escalate the things with patience.

Hi there,

I can understand your frustration with SBI's customer care support and the issues you faced with your EMI payment. I went through a similar situation a couple of years ago, so I can relate to your experience. It's definitely frustrating when you follow the instructions given by the customer care representative, only to end up with unexpected charges and complications.

In my case, I had paid my bill in full before the due date, yet the auto debit from my bank account still took place, resulting in a payment dishonor fee due to insufficient funds. I reached out to the nodal officers on the SBI Card app multiple times, but received generic responses and rejections. However, I persisted with my messages and even mentioned my intention to escalate the matter to the RBI ombudsman. After continuous messaging for a month and threatening further action, they finally refunded the charges.

Based on my experience, I would suggest you continue following up with SBI's customer care support. It's great that you insisted on speaking to their higher-ups and they have raised a request for you. Make sure to keep all records of your communication with them, including emails and any other evidence of their assurances. If you don't receive a callback within the specified time frame or if you're unsatisfied with the resolution, you can consider escalating the issue further.

It's unfortunate that you had to go through this ordeal, but persistence and clear communication often yield results. I hope your issue gets resolved soon and you receive the refund you deserve. Good luck!

Thanks for sharing the steps, I am getting decent replies from SBI customer support right now, and they asked me for my bank statement, let's see if they approve the reversal, hopefully they will, I don't know if making multiple requests from phone and email would worsen the situation. But today, I did receive the following SMS –

Dear SBI Cardholder, your request XXXXXXXXXXXXX for NSF Fee reversal with of Rs. 729.62 on your SBI Credit Card ending XXXXXXXXXXXXXXYY has been registered with us

Would be more than happy to have this resolve peacefully, because at the end of the day, it's just unacceptable to me this how their system works. Hoping for the best!

SBI is like that only. Therefore I always buy anything in emi 7 days before card statement generation & convert transaction to merchant emi, so less chance for them to do such stupidity.
And to tell you the truth, even I had the same thought, I thought maybe I should wait for a couple days, and order it once the bill is generated, but I worried I might miss on the 3K upfront discount + no-cost 9 months offer. So ordered ASAP, and I actually got a better deal than their so called "Summer Sale" or whatever that was called.
But now I've learnt this the hard way and would always keep this in mind and deactivate auto-debit ASAP.

Thanks for your kind words, I really appreciate it, it was just my bad that I could not wait for the bill to generate due to some interesting offers that I was getting that time, plus the fact that I absolutely had no idea about the auto-debit facility, not that I ever had to see it in action as I paid their bills mostly 5-8 days prior to due date.
But here we are, have contacted them and they seem to be supportive in regard to this, I wonder why one of them asked if I have availed any fee reversal this year, though I have a hunch that it has to do with whether or not they will actually reverse the charges. Anyways, I feel much more positive and relaxed now as compared to earlier. I really hope they fix this thing though.

Now you will get your payment dishonour fee reversed as SR already registered.Afterall good efforts always get desired results.
Really hoping so, I am supposed to send them my bank statement which means they might credit it to my bank account rather than the card itself, but wherever the money comes, happy to have it back!

The auto-debit feature was the main culprit in all of this. If it hadn't been activated in the first place, the entire scenario would have been different.
Very true, even I don't see any other charges levied against me, it's just the way auto-debit works that it's designed to debit due amount or minimum due amount, my case being the former. In any case, I learned my lesson, and I am glad I did, disabling auto-debit as well because in my case it won't really help much, since I don't maintain balance in my SBI Savings Account, it's more or less abandoned now. Maintaining bank balance in HDFC for MAB, and Fi for UPI transactions.

TIL — Today I Learned; If you're using a SBI Credit Card, please don't avail auto-debit feature and shop using EMI right before bill generation date ;p

if this is yr first time u can request customer care to revert yr payment dishonor fee. they have a policy of reverting this once in a year like tat. ensure this doesnt happen again. also make sure u pay the bill within 3 days of due date.
