Unexpected Convenience Fees with SBI RuPay Platinum JCB Debit Card (Friday Offer)

Hey guys, today is Friday and I went to Amazon to pay my electricity bill.

To my surprise, I noticed that my SBI RuPay Platinum JCB card is being considered as a 'CREDIT CARD' instead of 'DEBIT CARD' and incurs convenience fees of 1.18% when paying my electricity bill.

I tried talking to customer care, explaining everything to them, but they were clueless and took 30-45 minutes of my time without any resolution.

I have a question for everyone who holds this specific debit card variant:

Could you please check if your debit card is also being considered as credit card? Are you also being charged convenience fees?

Thanks in advance.

I asked some amazon developers in the payments division. apparently when the bin is entered the api returns whether it is a credit or debit_card which just reflects what Rupay returns on quering BIN to Rupay API.

A bit confusing, but the root cause is that Rupay is returing the status as credit_card. And that means all websites are actually treating this as credit card and not debit card, not only Amazon. So Rupay has to correct this mistake.

Those who have a twitter account will have to tag Rupay with BIN( first 6 digits of the card 353809 and mention this problem. Only then it may be solved.
if you check the bin/iin against the database it returns value as rupay/jcb credit. It is wrong classification of BIN at Rupay end

It seems like you didn't read the initial post.

LPG was never meant to have convenience fees. If you were charged for it, then it's definitely Amazon's fault.

Amazon’s terms and conditions do not include "LPG" in the convenience fees list.

Convenience fees are applied only to the following services: Electricity, Landline/Broadband, Postpaid, Water, Municipal Services, Municipal Tax, Cable TV, Education Fees, and Piped Gas.

Also, you won’t be charged convenience fees if you use a RuPay Platinum card. The issue with the SBI JCB RuPay Platinum card is that it’s being treated as a 'credit card' instead of a 'debit card.'

Hence, the fees :/
All other Debit card and credit card that are visa and mastercard there is showing a convinence fee on lpg. I have replied on the previously too where i said i was charged convince fee and amazon refunded it.
If amazon doesn't include lpg in convinence fee why all other cards are showing convince fee.

interesting. could be a bug.
Please do something, whenever your new electricity or postpaid bill generates. Check before paying if the sbi rupay-jcb card shows a convinience fee. Does not have to be a friday. you will see a convinience fee is still there.

But other websites recognize that it is a debit card, Amazon wallet load - PayU gateway also recognize this is a debit card.

Another problem - Amazon USA and Amazon Singapore cant recognized this is JCB Card (RuPay-Discover cards easily recognized Discover card and successfully added to Amazon USA site).

Amazon Singapore currently offer 10% off using all JCB International Cards but Amazon Singapore cant recognized this is JCB Card.

I also filed a complaint with JCB Card USA customer care, and they took two months only to tell me there’s a technical issue on Amazon USA, which is why RuPay-JCB Card is not working.

And another side JCB Card USA is always promoting that any International JCB Card can be used on Amazon USA.

It must be a different bug then, is it still happening with visa/mastercard cards?
