Advance Payment by Points

I have a Mercure Hotel booking for Rome in September. The fare is flexible. Had earlier planned to pay by points at checkin but after reading about the account suspension issue, I would like to pay by points in advance. How do we do that?

If its a refundable booking, cancel and re-book? I think that would be the cleanest option. Otherwise you can write to the hotel and ask them to charge to your points.
