Devaluation Amex Gyftr going to add 0.75% fee on Amazon Pay vouchers from Feb 1st

Effective 1 February 2025, a 0.75% convenience fee + GST will be charged on the purchase of Amazon Pay and Amazon Shopping gift vouchers via e-voucher platform on Reward Multiplier.

Amex has also joined the bandwagon of charging convenience fee on Amazon vouchers. Firstly there is shortage of high denomination Amazon pay vouchers and now this. Received this mail for Plat travel card.

I would definitely like to have zero fee option as my first preference; but that option is gone now.

Assuming you are buying ₹10k Amazon Pay vouchers and ₹10k Amazon Shopping vouchers each month, that's a total of ₹240k a year for which you will pay ₹2.1k in convenience fees to earn 4.8k extra points on MRCC, 9.6k extra points on Platinum Travel, and 19.2k extra points on Gold. And this doesn't include milestone benefits.

I have seen people spend ₹4k to buy 10k Amex points, so you're getting a much better deal here, at least on Platinum Travel and Gold both.

This is actually good. I know people using Amex/credit cards since 1995. There was no gyftr or such thing even existed. Genuine users will continue to use AMEX provided gyftr platform exists or not. Don't know what the fuss is all about adding convenience fee.

issue with amex is that offline acceptance thoda kaam hai, best usage is on online platforms like ecommerce websites and that too with vouchers
even better to club offline purchases with offline shopping vouchers.

sirf show off ke liye amex, pocket mein rakhne ka koi fayda nahi hai.. good reward rate bhi chaiyee

Indeed those who are using it regularly without inducing other potential spends won’t be affected but the thing is since they increased referral bonuses and introduced Gyftr rewards multiplier most of their customer acquisitions are owing to this inducements especially for MRCC and Plat Travel. Those who were using other cards (especially charge ones) are already in a different league since long.

This is somewhat accurate, but it's not practical. Apart from the fact that rates fluctuate a lot in general, you can eliminate a lot of these properties just because there are cheaper options available. While I do agree that their hotels are more luxurious in nature, you don't really have to stay at properties like Ritz Bengaluru or St. Regis Mumbai, unless you're a multi-millionaire and you don't really mind going the extra mile for the sake of luxury. Marriotts and Sheratons would suffice for most travelers in such cases. 10k to 20k is a sweet spot in my opinion, unless you need an ultra luxury vacation.

I have been using Amex since 6-7 years. Prior to the disruptions caused by Magnus, Amex used to offer 1,000 bonus points upon making 4 transactions above ₹1k on MRCC. That was their only benefit when it came to points, and 2% rewards was the norm back then.

Not exactly true, but it may depend on city to city. For me AMEX is amazing for booking International flight tickets (Insurance is complimentary if you book international flight tickets via AMEX), and hotels. I have had instances where AMEX has provided free upgrade from Business to First class, Exclusive book launch invitations, RSVP on special events from Rolex, Kapoor Watch, Quoram club, DIOR, Louis Vuitton, etc. It depends on individual profile with AMEX and how and where we are getting our card swiped. 95% of the time, my card is accepted, maybe I am using it only at exclusive high spend places. Judging AMEX by gyftr platform or by referral bonus would be wrong.

So,

3x = 3%
and in that they're taking 0.89%.

making mrcc with milestone becomes 4.4%.

if they increase this in future then notable cards in amex would be plat travel only.

Received mail now that amex will charge convenience fee on amazon pay and amazon shopping gift vouchers from feb 1st 2025
