Amex Sending Platinum Charge Upgrade offer for JAN 2025 - 150000 MR Points

I have a platinum travel and got this offer for platinum upgrade as well. Can someone help with below queries

1. Do we need to surrender the platinum travel card upon upgrade ? I am close to reaching 4L milestone and would get 25K points+ 10K Taj Vouchers which I dont want to miss.
2. If i opt to upgrade, can i still keep my platinum travel card ? Will my existing points be impacted or will they be clubbed with 100k points which I will receive on upgrade. Are points tied to account or card ?
3. Can i upgrade to Platinum now and close it before renewal ? Will the points still stay in my account considering i continue with platinum travel card?

Thanks
1) No need to surrender anything.

2) Yes, you can still keep your Platinum travel card, but you will have to pay the renewal fee.
Also the existing points will get clubbed with 150000 points you will receive for paying 77880.
The points are tied to your account.

3) Yes you can close it before renewal.
Yes, the points will remain in your account because you paid for them.

For everyone considering the upgrade, what's your strategy from the second year onward? Will you continue using the card or close it?
I will cross the bridge when the time comes. I had the card earlier for 2 years and I used it well. Then didn’t have the use case for the following year hence cancelled and got the gold charge. Now I applied again for the upgrade. This year I am sure.

Had my PT card in March, easily spent 4L by June and hold MRCC/Gold.
Also, Axis Atlas and my yearly spends on cards is around 10-15L.
Cibil is 810 and good amount of mixed cards/Home/Car loan, flawless repayment history.
Didn't get upgrade offer, hell my PT card initially had 60k limit and then increased to 1L.

Applied PT card for wife too (her first major card after FD backed IDFC card to generate initial cibil).
She got 2.7L limit from the get go. Only other card she holds is MRCC (applied same time), had cancelled the FD backed IDFC card after getting PT.
Spent 4L on her card too by November.
She got the upgrade offer for Platinum Charge card.

So yeah no idea about criteria for upgrade or even limit enhancement, both requests for my main account were rejected.

PS: Anyone knows if we can take GST Input Credit for the fees ? Since we are self-employed and run our own business (Pvt Ltd company)

No need to surrender.

Yes, you can keep.

Yes, you can close.
I have already spoken to customer care regarding this. If you upgrade from the Platinum Travel card to the Charge card, your existing card will be automatically canceled. However, if you want to keep both cards, you will need to apply for the Charge card separately. In this case, you will not receive 150,000 MR points as part of the upgrade offer but will instead receive 100,000 MR points as per the card’s regular offer.

My travel card is due for renewal in May 2025, and I have already achieved the milestone for an upgrade offer to a charge card. If I first upgrade to the charge card, I will receive 150,000 MR points. Since American Express does not impose a cooling period, I can reapply for the travel card afterward. This way, I will be eligible for milestone benefits twice in one year, receiving the upgrade points and the new milestone benefits again. However, I heard that American Express cards are not eligible for gold purchases within the first six months of issuance. To buy gold during this period, one must use a Razorpay link instead of a POS terminal.

Charge Card is almost always given additionally.. So u will probably keep ur plat travel & get a plat charge with plat travel becoming free till u keep the charge card.. Amex Upgrade offers are usually to give u another card and not replace ur current card.. this is true in most cases..

Not true. Plat travel or Plat Reserve are not free with Plat charge.

I figured out a way one could save ~1.5L on ~7.5L spends, but it kinda revolves explicitly around Tajs and Oberois.
I love those brands, but it seems a bit too constrained. So I am contemplating about whether to take it or not.

My calculations were a bit speculative though, considering I neither had this card nor came across any card-owner who was willing to give some detailed reviews of its features; the ground reality could be completely different.
Attaching them anyway in case you find them useful (or are kind enough to point out the naivety).

Stay 15N at Taj @15000/N (for calculation purposes), use the 25% discount they so proudly flaunt.
Lets assume some random offer gave better rates for 5N, so it gives us 10N.
Considering Member rate at 10% discount of BAR, we can save 15%.
So it comes to 2250/N saved.
Spends = 112500
Saved = 22500

Dine 15 times at Taj (come on, you are staying 15N there).
Lets deduct 5 from there for shareholder discount, member stay discount, bla bla.
10 meals remaining.
Each meal @7500 can yield savings of 1875.
Spends = 56250
Saved = 18750

Stay 3 times at Oberoi for 3N each
Use the Pay 2 Stay 3 rate, another thing they flaunt
Considering breakfast inclusive rate is @30000/N (for calculation only, actual prices may reach $1000/N)
Plat rate per stay = 60000
Normal rate per stay = 81000 (oberoi direct booking yields 10% discount)
Spends = 180000
Saved = 63000

Use Amex FHR twice
Hotel marks up prices by $50
Lets assume 30000/N here as well (actual prices may be quite lower, but it doesn't change calculations by much)
Use the $100 credit, get a free meal (and apologize to the street vendors).
Spends (2stays @2N each) = 120000
Saved = 8000 ($1=INR80 for calculation)

Use the Accor Plus
Dine 5 times across a year, for 2 people.
Each meal @5000, with 50% discount = 2500
Spends = 12500
Saved = 12500

Net spends = 112500+56250+180000+120000+12500 = 481250x1.18(draconian taxes) = 567875
Net saved = 22500+18750+63000+8000+12500 = 124750x1.18 = 147205
Net bill (without the plat) = 567875+147205 = 715080 (<7.5L)

This is over and above all the benefits and memberships that the card provides.

I'm more of a Marriott guy, so I can absolutely squeeze the value out of those 150,000 points. The problem lies in what to do from second year onwards.

My wife and I have enough combined spends for this card to come out ahead compared to two sets of Amex trifecta; but I'm not willing to take this step because it would mean putting all expenses on a single PAN, which is 50-50 right now. Could cause tax complications.

Plus, this card doesn't provide significant additional lifestyle benefits for me, except for Hertz Gold membership, which would be useful only in locations where SIXT is unavailable.

To make my choice simpler, I didn't even consider the MR points.
I just calculated what I needed to do so that it aligns with my plans and saves me some money.
My options were basically:
- Pivot from stay where you want (albeit mostly Marriott and Hyatt) to Oberoi and Taj only.
- Skip Amex Plat

As of now, I am going with option 2.

Not true. Plat travel or Plat Reserve are not free with Plat charge.
This has been the case with me. I have had Plat Reserve for a long time. Originally, I used to pay 10K a year (sometimes 5K). Last year, I took Plat charge for 60k. Canceled it after 1 year. But during this year, they converted my Plat reserve free.

Yeah, this has worked with a lot of other people as well.

One companion card can be converted into if you have multiple, especially between Plat Reserve or Plat Travel when you opt for the Platinum Charge.
It's not a feature but more of an exception that can be made possible with a humble request.

Anyone opted for upgrade and card got approved?
Got a call from amex, they first informed, your platinum travel wont be closed it will be retained as it is and you will get platinum charge, so in call they sent email link filled the form, vkyc done and once this is done they said to write mail back stating which option you would choose option 1 or 2 in upgrade (Mr points or voucher) and v kyc done and that's it now waiting for approval.

They gave some information beforehand that as per adhar adress name etc to be properly filled without any issues and same will be taken. So be careful in adress fill etc.

i choose option 1 mr point with spending 50k in a month

Regards
